seeking true love

Ula

Ula is a hopeless romantic who's given to flights of fancy and prone to acting on her whims. It's whims that have led her to the Southern Icefield, but whiteout conditions and an unfamiliarity with the land is a disastrous combination. But just as things are looking bleak and Ula is thinking she's done for a very handsome coatl named Farniir sees her and takes action. It doesn't take long for him to carry her back to the lair, and then there are so many faces coming and going, making sure she's alright. They bring her potions and food and dry nesting, and soon enough she feels as good ever, good enough to move on. Except Farniir is very kind, and so handsome, and he's made such an effort to make sure Ula is alright. Plus the clan matriarch has said Ula can stay. So, really, it would be rude to leave...

Things between Farniir and Ula move very fast, and it's not long before Ula finds herself sitting on a nest of three eggs. Which means they are now on nest duty, not required to do their usual tasks, which means more time to spend together. This, as it turns out, is a bad thing. Oh sure, Farniir is plenty handsome for Ula's tastes, and his kind and gentle nature is delightful in small doses, but . . . Well, he's kind of boring. He's older and likes to take things slow, whereas Ula is young! Passionate! This just will not do, Ula determines. She needs to find her hatchlings loving homes pronto, and find herself a new man. Because sadly there is no way Farniir is her true love.

Okay, so things didn't work out so well with Farniir. That's fine. And staying on in the clan? Also fine. Maybe she's just being silly, but Ula is positive she will find her true love in this clan. She will find a fun, handsome, energetic dragon to love her, and that's that.
..........Enter Korekiyo. He's only a few days younger than Ula, which would normally be a dealbreaker, but... Well, he's just so fun. He's full of energy and he flashes through the tunnels like lightning. It's hard to believe that he's Light flight, but maybe Flight has less to do with things than Ula had once believed. Either way, Korekiyo is a delight. Every second with him is fresh, vibrant, exciting! Honestly, Ula is beginning to think this is love. What else could it be? And it doesn't hurt that Korekiyo is so handsome...
No, that doesn't hurt at all.

Ula is convinced, she's positive that Korekiyo is the one. Their relationship is energetic and wild, and she can be herself with him in a way she's never been able to be herself before. If this isn't love, Ula doesn't know what is.
..........The relationship progresses, and at no point does Ula feel regret, she's done it. She's done it! They even have a nest together, and two little beautiful girls hatch from it. But of course things couldn't be perfect forever, and eventually tragedy strikes.
.........."What do you mean you have to serve the Icewarden!?" Ula demands, voice thick with foreign emotion.
.........."I just have to," Korekiyo insists. "I can feel it in my blood, feel the ice forming and flowing. I have to serve the Icewarden."
.........."But you're a light dragon!" Ula insists, desperately grasping at straws in the hopes of convincing him to stay, please just stay.
.........."I have to go," Korekiyo repeats, and Ula feels betrayed.
.........."But he's so cold and methodical, and you're... not." This is her last attempt and they both know it.
.........."Please, I'm sorry. I love you."
.........."Get out." She doesn't love him, she never did. She can't have. Because if she loved him this would be the end of her journey, and she can't have that. She's just trying to find love, and it won't end with her alone and forgotten. She could go with him, but they both know she'd be miserable. So instead she stays, and when Korekiyo leaves she tells herself she's fine, and she's going to keep going. She considers their hatchlings, but they look too much like him, and Ula's always been a tad selfish. So she asks Farniir to please look out for them and find them good homes while she throws herself into her role in the clan.
..........She's not sulking, she never sulks.
