Decayspawn are chaotic. They are forces of great, unpredictable change. Their purpose is to sow discord into the clans of the Scarred Wasteland, separating the adaptable survivors from their weaker kin. They split the membrane of their eggs with an initial goal to spread across Plague, determined to fill their lungs with its putrid air. They are selfish creatures, often too powerful for their youth, sometimes not enough to make it to adulthood unscathed. Those children who die out in the Wasteland become nothing more than unfortunate scavenges for others–they do not deserve their mother’s thoughts. But there are plenty others who pass their first few years, and it’s these terrifying ones who throw the Plaguelands into turmoil. The rich destruction they bring with them is their purpose, the reason their mother splintered them from her body in the first place.

Decay’s children are similar to their mother, capricious heralds of plague and disaster who care little for the lives of the weak. However, it is imperious to believe that exact replication of her being alone is enough to ensure their glory, a reality the queen is aware of. To ensure adaptability so that they might produce unique lineages, the essence of another dragon settles into the eggs, incubating alongside the Queen’s. Some will say this taints them. Decay knows better. She continues to pick and choose dragons, often to fulfill her own hidden agendas.

Clans that find themselves hosting one of Decay’s children gain significant political leverage, but they must be wary. Decayspawn forced to endure a middling clan quickly turn ambitious, and many lairs have met their demise due to the impatience of a single one.

Common characteristics of Decayspawn are provided below. Hosts are free to deny or accept these suggestions per individual spawn (maybe yours has a foggy memory, becomes shadetainted, or lacks horns), but it should be noted that these are true for the majority of Decay’s children:

━Knowledge of the circumstances of their birth and their origins. These children remember what happened while incubating in the egg. They know their mother, they know the castle which she rules. They know what they are.

━High shade resistance; may succumb to powerlust and become tainted, but this is a very rare phenomenon. Any spawn who aligns with shade is immediately disowned and hunted by the castle’s forces. Decay has no tolerance for its taint among her children.

━Horns on their head, derived from their mother’s iconic roundhorns. The shape and size vary wildly, from spindly and tall to rather nubby. Horn shape is quite random and not indicative of abilities or potential.

Luminance is the most common dragon to receive the honour of offering himself to the hatchlings, and although he has curiously gone missing, his essence continues to permeate the membrane. No one is quite sure how Luminance earned that right; he is by far the second-oldest dragon of the castle, second to Decay herself, and has yet to reveal his origins in recent eras. He lacks magic, but it’s said the castle knows him so well that it has shallow stores of his essence in his absence. However, his influence is weak, and can be easily ushered out of the egg by another’s.

Thanks for your interest in owning Decayspawn! I don’t have many rules regarding these children–I prefer watching what becomes of them and what people do with them. If you have any questions about these hatchlings, feel free to contact me on Flight Rising (or on Tumblr if you know it). I love to be contacted whenever these troublesome kids are involved in lore!

My only real rule is to not assume one of my dragons have interacted with or felt anything toward these kids unless I’ve okay’d it. The eggs are found, brought to the nursery and cared for like other eggs, and left until they are found empty. That should be the extent of their interaction with the Bone Castle unless we’ve discussed otherwise. I’m glad to plot things, so you should absolutely ask me if you’re unsure, but I’m very laissez-faire.

Feel free to adjust this bio as you need. I’ve tried to not imply anything about these kids beyond ‘terrifying jerks from Plague’. The item icons are only there to provide inspiration and are in no way indicative of my expectations. I can also provide renaming scrolls.
