Past
"I refuse to go to war again."

Cast Out Arcturus was a powerful fire mage from a very young age. As long as he can remember, he has been able to summon and shape fire around him. This proved dangerous before he learned control; he started a fire in the home of his birth clan, and found himself quickly ousted not long after. It wasn't anything personal, he'd been told. He was just that dangerous. Traveling alone suited him better, anyway. He traveled to the burning lands of the Ashfall Wastes, slowly learning more about the fire within him, but no matter what he did, he never gained more control over it. It was a constant presence in the back of his mind, burning in his chest, warm and hungry. Every time he released his magic, it grew more vicious and harder to control. Like an animal of its own, the fire within him was slowly consuming him from the inside out. Soldier Eventually something even deeper than his magic caught up to him: the Search. When the first inkling of that instinct rose in his heart, Arcturus joined the first clan he could find, intending to move on when he learned more about what he was seeking. Unfortunately, they saw his magic as a valuable asset, and he was drafted into that clan's army. With him at the head of their war efforts, that clan laid waste to their neighbors and took more territory. Arcturus needed to leave; war was not what his magic was given to him for, and every time he used it he lost a little bit of himself--what if he lost it all before he found his Charge? He became desperate for an escape, but had no options. And then came Polaris. Polaris had heard of Arcturus and the magic he could use, and spared no expense hunting him down. From the beginning, their intention had been to take him away from the clan that was using him and use him for their own purposes instead. It took time, and bribery, but the warmongering clan soon let him leave with Polaris, and Arcturus was sure that nothing could be as bad as what he had left behind. |

The Triangulum Arcturus was put in charge of the Triangulum, a group intended to defend Polaris's kingdom. While it is still the job of a soldier, it's a different war. Here, it's a about intimidation, rather than decimation: if the neighbors think him too powerful to mess with, they simply won't challenge him. Like this, he can defend his new home without ever using his magic, and therefore without risking being consumed by it. Arcturus did not get on well with his first subordinate; Denebola was a member of Polaris' court before him, and made it clear from the start that she had no intention of following stupid orders. Arcturus would like to believe he proved himself to her early, but it's difficult to judge. For months, the two of them circled each other like sharks, waiting for betrayal. Eventually, they settled into an uneasy accord: they would work together when they must, but there was no need for them to like each other. Spica The tipping point for the Triangulum was when Polaris returned from one of their journeys with a ghost in tow. They introduced it as Spica, the third member of the Triangulum, but Arcturus never saw what it was. For weeks, Arcturus wondered if this was somehow some prank that Polaris was pulling, though Polaris has never had the humor for a joke like this, until one day he saw the tip of an unfamiliar dragon's tail disappear around a corner. Following what he believed to be an intruder, Arcturus finally came upon Spica, in the flesh: a small Spiral with nearly no presence at all. In an instant Arcturus had the knowledge, deep in his bones, that he had found something important. Just like that, the Search was over. But with a single look at this unfamiliar face, he knew this was not the time to admit it. Arcturus was the leader of the Triangulum first, and the first thing he needed to do was gain his allies' trust. He would not do that by pledging undying loyalty at their first meeting. |

Uniting the Triangulum Arcturus quickly decided that there may never be a right time to tell Spica, or anybody, about his completed Search. There were much more important things at stake, and so long as Spica was near enough that Arcturus could know he was safe, it would have to be enough. He put the effort he could into gaining the trust of a skittish, nearly invisible dragon, and he began to see changes when Spica started to come out of his shell. When all three of them were together, the Triangulum almost felt friendly. Arcturus and Denebola weren't as awkward with one another when Spica was there, and Spica seemed more comfortable when he wasn't cornered by a single conversation partner. Slowly but surely, they began to get along, and even to like each other. The final straw was the same as the first: Spica. He came to Arcturus for advice, something Arcturus had never imagined possible from such a secretive creature. Spica spoke of his past, how he had fallen out of love with the world, how he had nearly faded from existence with nobody around to see him, and how now, even though he could be seen, he still worried that he would never be real again. The admission broke Arcturus's heart. He had been watching Spica every possible second, afraid of the same thing. After all his time trapped, unable to seek his Charge, it seemed miraculous that his Charge had simply stumbled into the right place, and Arcturus had never been a lucky dragon. He feared that Spica was a dream which would vanish into the air. Arcturus could say none of that. Instead, he said what he could: "I see you," he said: the truth. "And I will never stop looking for you. I have known you were real since the moment I laid eyes on you, and I will be here to tell you, as many times as you need, and whenever you need to hear it, that you exist." |

Family His relationship with Spica was changed after that conversation. There was more trust between them, more understanding, and it became easier for them to speak to each other. Arcturus began to find it easier to find Spica, too, to sense his presence even when he tries to conceal it. Strangely, Spica seemed to be seeking him out willingly, even if they didn't speak. They became comfortable. Friendly. Caring. Denebola was more difficult. When Arcturus discovered her relationship with a dragon outside the Court--a clear violation of Polaris' strict laws--he was concerned that it would put the Triangulum in danger. He was determined to report it rather than try to keep a secret from the most dangerous dragon he knows, but Denebola pulled out an unexpected weapon: blackmail material. She leveraged secrets Arcturus hadn't even realized were secrets, and Arcturus bent to her will: he hadn't realized how many things he'd been hiding. What was one more? That confrontation with Denebola was the last time Arcturus blamed his feelings for Spica on the Charge-bond. He knew it was deeper, but it took an outside observer using them as a weapon against him to get him to admit it. He kept it from Spica, at least in words, but the two of them knew each other well, and Arcturus is sure his love knows he's loved. Burning Out Arcturus isn't sure what will happen to him when his magic finally burns him away. He hasn't discussed this possibility with anybody else, but he suspects Polaris knows. Whether or not they care is another question; Polaris is anything but soft, and they, without a doubt, would be more than willing to sacrifice Arcturus for his power. He uses his magic when he must; he is protecting more than just the Akasha Court. He is protecting his family. Arcturus has come to terms with it. It's out of his hands; he can't whether or not his magic destroys him, but he has decided to live the life he has before him to the fullest. He doesn't know, after all, if he will burn out; he might simply rise again from the ashes. |
