Biography
Gintaur helped Rosalynd prepare for accompanying Aus and Aldara to the Lightweaver, just as he had for the last four times she has had to go through this duty. “You were keeping count?” Rosalynd chided as Gintaur adjusted the Sunguard Chest she had to wear every month for the elemental festivals. “I thought you would have lost track of it by now.” “Well, you have to leave after helping ten other dragons too, after all,” Gintaur stated simply, the familiar melancholy seeping in his voice whenever their conversation veered in this direction. “Moreah, Brydon and Alteco, Adal, Alay… and now your own Aus and Aldara. Time sure flies fast,” Rosalynd recalled their names with practised ease. “Pretty soon it will be me.” There was silence after that, punctuated only by the metallic clanking of the Solar Blades that Gintaur adjusted over Rosalynd’s black wings. The whole elemental holiday attire was ridiculously flashy and redundant, Gintaur thought. Even without all these brilliant enhancements, Rosalynd shone brighter than anything he has ever known in his life. “Gintaur?” “Hm?” “Do you regret it?” Gintaur stopped working to look at Rosalynd. “Regret what?” “Staying with me. Loving me. Even though you know I will be gone so soon.” She did not meet his eyes. Gintaur was stunned for a moment. It was the first time Rosalynd had ever brought up their situation this bluntly. They’ve known each other since the day they hatched, and loved each other ever since. When Rosalynd was formally declared the Priestess and had to move away from the main clan, Gintaur didn’t even think twice about following her there, helping her take care of the children who were destined to serve the Goddess. They could not mate. They could not run away. And after Rosalynd fulfils her duty – to see ten of their charges through to the end – they could not be together anymore, because Rosalynd had asked Gintaur to keep taking care of the flower garden they grew together long after she’s gone, and how could Gintaur say no? Instead, as a response, Gintaur takes the Violet Lei Rosalynd always wears during simpler, less festive times, and places it around her neck, over her regalia. Rosalynd knits her brows in confusion. “But… won’t it get crushed? I take it off during festivals so it won’t get–” “You really do look more like yourself when surrounded in blooms, my one who smells like flowers.” Rosalynd’s golden eyes widened, her ridges flaying in flusteredness. Then, she managed to smile. “When I come back, it will be my turn to weave flower wreaths for both of us,” she said determinedly, “so until then, make sure we have lots of beautiful flowers for that.” Gintaur stood on the edge of their cliff-home as his beloved Priestess and two children set off for the Beacon. He thought back on all the comings and goings he had witnessed on this landing, of young dragons both shy and brazen but brave enough to face their obligations. He thought back on how far Rosalynd had come from the awkward and unbelievably bashful hatchling from his childhood, how she stepped up to her duty despite her misgivings, how she had grown into her role yet still remained essentially the same steadfast, kind-hearted dragon who loved flowers and hated loud noises and loved Gintaur like no one ever had. Do I regret it? he asked himself. No. Never. I would have regretted it more if I never loved her. |
