Ra was a curious hatchling who wanted nothing more than to learn everything he could get his claws on. In his old home, he was tolerated more than encouraged. Driven out one day to find his place and in hopes of toughening him up, Ra stumbles upon Galla, where he is met with kindness and curiosity, and where he is introduced to Elliot. Finally, Ra is given the education he so thirsted for. In the wake of the Coup, Ra is blinded during the initial ambush, in hopes of killing him after he'd gotten a vision of Enjorlas' plans. Although he can't see it, Ra is conscious of his facial scars and obscures them with a veil from Guarian, a gift given long ago when the other Seer was still alive. In her place, he tells Elliot and Annalise of the visions he gets almost every day now; before, when the visions would warp and distort his perception, becoming blind was a blessing. Now they have come to become haunting presences and wistful sounds. In the darkness, everything else has amplified. He keeps the worst of them to himself. When Polarlicht comes home with a young Wildclaw in tow, Ra pays her no mind. They go about their business and stay out of each other's wings until Samut interrupts his reading. How do you read when you cannot see? she had asked, her heavy presence sitting beside him. I use touch, he replied, continuing to run the pads of his fingers along the bumps carefully, almost benevolent. It was a draft, retelling what had transpired in the coup. It hurt him physically to recall, but he continued. There is more to see than what you can perceive. Samut had stayed quiet then before softly asking - Can you teach me? To see what you see? Ra remembered smiling - not out of affection or through mysterious wiles, but because he was young, alone with a girl, and she had asked to share something only he had the honor of witnessing. Ra smiled then, to hide the little butterflies begin to flutter in his stomach. Okay. |

It was surprising for everyone, but if Ra were to be honest, it shocked him the most. Samut was a Ward from White Castle, a distant kingdom whose power and reputation made itself well known throughout the other territories, and she was the daughter of their Matriarch. Ra was blind, traumatized, and hid behind others and witnessed visions he couldn't keep track of and that were adamant on driving him mad- -and yet, this powerful dragon chose him for a mate. She is his rock, his anchor to reality when nothing began to make sense, when Ra could not tell what had happened from what was happening from what will come to be. They stay together for the most part, Ra especially enjoying the feel of her beside him. He loves her, but of course they argue. Their ideals and personalities tend to clash - Samut is just as cunning as she is tactless, and Ra is just as attentive as he is defensive. He knows Samut loves her children, but Ra does not want them to be destined only for war. Just as they both found strength in knowledge, so too does he want his children to follow the mantle they wish to carry - especially his sons. Even blind, Ra can see the influences of Samut's upbringing. |
