Veneficus is a warlock that has lived through many eras alone in their laboratory, perched precariously in a tower that leans over a bluff in the shifting expanse. After years of exposure to experiments, Veneficus grew ill. Because their tower is remote, almost inaccessible really, and they have no contacts with the outside world, except Edgar, Veneficus knew he needed to travel to find someone to cure their sickness as it progressed. Edgar advised Veneficus to seek out help from Orrik in the sundial terrace.

They arrived having shed most of their scales, leaving raw exposed skin beneath it, which stung in the bright sunlight. Orrik took Veneficus to a cave in the mountains to quarantine them while he worked to remedy the mysterious illness. Orrik, however, although a practiced healer, is unfamiliar with many of the chemicals and energies that Veneficus has been exposed to during their experiments. Orrik feels that requests for information regarding these elements should be brought in front of Cearephon's council, but Caerephon insists that his council is about political philosophy, and cannot be derailed by missions of science.
