He opened his eyes.

The first thing he noticed was just how much smaller he had become. His body no longer weaved around the small cave his family shared, no longer pinning his wings against his body for hours on end.

He exhaled, smoke billowing around him as he stepped away from the altar. But the smoke did not subside. It followed on his heels, wisping around his neck and wings.

He looked to his mother, who watched him with sharp violet eyes. His brother hovered nearby, their crystalline wings shimmering in the soft glow of the cave.

They were so close to his size now.

A moment passed before his mother smiled. The shadows favored this blessing. She gestured to the smoke that seemed to emanate from his body. It will serve you well in the days to come.

His brother did not meet his eyes. Instead, his sibling jerked his head to the side. I assume this will satisfy you, then?

The three of them turned. The female Spiral was still there, unmoving. Her glittering eyes were almost black in the darkness of the cave.

She smiled, gaze fixed upon the new Banescale. More than enough.
