Despair. To many, it is but a word. A single mass for all the negative emotions one has built up into a raucous cacophony. It gathers them all up, lumps them together, and sends them raining down on their intended target. Negative emotions such as these can drive someone mad, corrupting their minds and causing them to do normally unthinkable acts. For the Puella Magi, it isn't just the mind that is corrupted. The deadliest secret to those bearing a golden-encased, egg-shaped, magical gem gifted from a contractor is not what the gem itself is, but what the black, smoke-like substance that fills it can cause.

As magic is used from a Soul Gem, it generally corrupts, blackening and slowly tainting the gem with darker wisps inside. Generally speaking, clearing the gem shortly after a small amount is gained will prevent any side effects. Those who decide to not, however, might find that as the amount of inky, swirly corruption filling their Soul Gem increases, the opposite happens to their state of mind. If they aren't already unstable, that is. The less a Soul Gem is cleansed, the more a magical girl's mental state decreases, until either a lack of realizing how much magic they're using or an emotional outburst tips them over the edge, destroying the last bit of purity in a Magical Girl's Soul Gem. That is when the metamorphosis from a Magical Girl to a Witch occurs.

Without warning, the Magical Girl's soul twists and constricts, shattering it's old container in order to form something new for a now much different being. a Grief Seed replaces the Soul Gem, and the husk which was once a Magical Girl is left to rot as the Witch reveals it's new form and creates a landscape mirroring it's mindscape at the time of creation. Occasionally, it would feed off of the negative emotions that plagued someone's heart. One day, a Magical Girl would enter into the barrier, kill it, and obtain it's Grief Seed to stave off her own despairing. Whether she knew it or not was another question entirely. At least, that is how it's supposed to go.

____Ophelia doesn't remember much from her time before existence. Faint, foggy memories try to fill in gaps far too wide, and only the bitter taste of guilt and self-hatred linger in her mouth at the thought of them. Many memories are gone, however and they far outweigh the ones that remain, taunting and tormenting her of past failures and bad deeds. She generally hates reminder of these memories, lashing out violently. Most people from those memories receive the same treatment, minus one in particular.

____A single, blue-haired girl stands out amongst those bad memories, as the single thing that's not so bad in comparison to the others. Even then, details are fuzzy and foggy, and dwelling on the memory seems to almost physically hurt. She prefers to not dwell on this memory for that reason, and can react rather bitterly when prodded about it. Generally speaking, mentioning her memories is rather bad, and shouldn't be done carelessly. One wrong move could easily cost you your life around this fiery-tempered witch.
