STORY

xxx

When Wick was first formed, the world was a much different place. She can't remember the year, but she can remember the bloodshed and the constant fighting between dragon clans and beastclans. The world was a darker place back then; individuals built walls and weapons and very few were brave enough to venture out into the darkness of the night alone.

Wick was different too, then. For the first millennium, she never bothered to take on a draconic form. Instead, she moved about as a gloomy black cloud, or as a small cluster of fireflies. Lone dragons in the dark forest would see bright yellow lights and follow them deeper in, not knowing that these lights weren't lanterns at all, but Wick. Most were never seen again, and those that were never really recovered from whatever they saw out there.

Legends grew around Wick, and her powers grew. As dragons and beastclans whispered about her she gained more power. She continued her games, never really considering all of those that she led to their deaths; it was her role as a trickster spirit to spread chaos, after all.

But, as time wore on and the world changed, Wick changed with it. Monsters began to vanish, and even Wick felt bored with her usual routine and began to pull smaller and less deadly pranks on individuals within the woods. She still killed and maimed, but on a much smaller scale than before. And so, it wasn't long before dragons forgot the dangers of the woods and began to venture out.

Wick was resting in the bough of a tree when she first heard the noise. She perked up, golden eyes flashing with excitement as her smoky black body coalesced around her. She quickly descended to the ground and followed the sound. They continued to grow in volume as Wick realized that they seemed like high-pitched screams and whimpers.

When she finally came to a clearing and poked her head out, Wick saw something she had never seen before. It was small, and rather ugly, and it was teetering on legs that seemed far to large for its little body. Large, purple eyes with tears at their corners glanced around at the trees. It's mouth continuously opened and made those horrific sounds, causing Wick to wince backwards.

Her mind raced as she tried to figure out what this creature was. Surely she wasn't sitting in that tree long enough for some new species to evolve, right? Then, she noticed the tiny feathery wing nubs on its back, and realized; she was looking at a hatchling. If she tilted her head she could almost see the resemblance to those feathery serthis-looking dragons. Quottle, was it?

Wick shook off the questions piling in her mind and instead settled down to watch this tiny creature. It seemed distressed, but Wick couldn't imagine why. There was more than enough food and water within these woods if the silly thing would just stand up and go looking. Instead, it seemed content to simply sit there and scream.

The noise grated at every fiber of Wick's being, and she began to think of ways to quiet it down. The bog always seemed to quiet dragons down once they sunk all the way in, but she doubted she could convince this little thing to follow her all the way there. And besides, she needed a quicker way to quiet it down. She was thinking so hard that she didn't notice that her fireflies were flashing brightly until she noticed the silence.

Wick glanced downwards and noticed that the small creature was looking straight at her, glancing between the glowing lights appearing around her form. It let out a strange noise that may have somewhat resembled a giggle and made grabby hands.

Confused, Wick dimmed the fireflies and noticed how the creature's tears began anew. Before it could get started again, she flickered them back on and watched the little one laugh and babble on the ground below. Something like fondness flickered in Wick's amorphous heart, and she suddenly wished she had a form that could actually smile. She'd never had a need for facial expressions before now.

The noise of a branch snapping on the other end of the clearing caused Wick to look up. The babbling of the baby faded into the background as she looked into the hungry eyes of a monster. Its maw was open wide and dripping with saliva as it slowly inched into the clearing and closer to the baby.

If Wick had veins, they would be full of ice at this point as feelings she had never felt before welled up. It was akin to when other individuals would draw her victims away before she finished her games with them, or when she discovered that some other creature had taken her sleeping spot while she was gone.

She had no time to think. Before she even knew it, she was across the clearing, slashing at the beast with sharp claws made of darkness, magic, and anger. It let out a screech, causing the baby to begin crying again as it noticed the creature behind it. Wick ignored it all, and continued her assault. The creature's jaws snapped through the air, landing down on the cloudy substance that made up Wick's body but making no injuries.

Time seemed to pass quickly, and before she knew it, Wick was floating over the still body of the monster that had attempted to eat her new little buddy. She looked down at the baby, and felt something twist inside of her at the expression it was watching her with. Something like fear shone in its eyes as it took in the sight of a black cloud with twinkling lights.

Without thinking, Wick quickly morphed herself into a mimicry of the baby in front of her, feathers and all. This seemed to delight the child, and they quickly grabbed at Wick and began ruffling her newly formed feathers. She allowed it.

After a few moments, Wick could hear something else approaching through the underbrush, and she stepped back from the child and prepared for another battle. But, as the larger dragon entered the clearing, the baby cheered. It was clearly a parent, from the way that the dragon scooped up the child and held onto it tightly in relief.

Then, it noticed the dead creature and stopped cold. Its eyes glanced around the clearing and spotted Wick, now in her new hatchling form. Wick quickly stood and morphed back into a cloud, eyeing the dragon with two large glowing yellow eyes. The dragon seemed shocked before nodding to her in thanks and leaving with their child.

From then on, the myths and legends around Wick changed. She became a spirit that was trusted by many individuals to look over and protect their hatchlings. Offerings became more frequent, especially at a new hatching, and Wick began using her hatchling form more often to play with young ones.

She enjoys her new role, but still doesn't like or trust adults of any species. While dragons and others trust her with their children, they recognize that she's still a trickster spirit and may lead their children away but will always return them within a day. For adults, however, she follows no such rules.

Maewyn
Family
Maewyn and Wick are both trickster spirits at heart, and have known each other for centuries. They get along fairly well, though have gone through periods of furious silence at one another for perceived 'transgressions'. They both have a certain level of 'competitiveness' in regards to their tricks and are always trying to one-up one another.
