Biography

| JUNIPER | [♫] Laws of Robotics
{ Engineer, Inventor | He/Him | Gay }

Rowan Driscoll was one of Sornieth’s most renowned and celebrated engineers. Using decades worth of practical experience and decades more worth of study, he brought progressive technology, energy sources, and construction techniques to countless clans across the continent. He worked with dragonkind’s brightest minds in medicine, transportation, communication, and magic to invent and patent dozens of state-of-the-art designs, spanning a multitude of fields. Naturally, his death shook the scientific community to its core…

...and left his only son and heir, Juniper, with quite a pair of shoes to fill.

Even as he mourned the loss of his father, his greatest influence and inspiration, Juniper relished the challenge of living up to the Driscoll family name. He began fine-tuning his own work immediately and sought counsel from all of his late father’s most trusted colleagues. Though young, Juniper possessed his predecessor’s incredible creativity, with a dash of his mother’s wild heart, both of which served him well as he labored tirelessly in his workshop in the wake of his father’s passing. His peers would describe his demeanor then as manic, a frantic need to carry on where his father had left off, as if it might somehow preserve a part of him.

Only when his mother fell ill did he leave his stool, to watch over her in her final days. “Do not cry for me, my dove,” she said to him. “I go to be with your dear father and leave this world’s future in your capable hands.”

All at once, the fervor Juniper had displayed faded, replaced by the cold realization that, for the first time in his life, he was alone. He sequestered himself in his workshop, and in its privacy, surrounded by the skeletons of projects yet unrealized, he gave himself over to sorrow. He would never create again, he decided, for he had spent too much time creating, when he should have spent it with his mother.

Then he remembered Hyde.

Yes, his father had been undeniably taken with Hyde, the mysterious inventor from Clan Feldspar. Often he had remarked that Hyde was one of Sornieth’s best and brightest. “He’ll surpass me one day,” he would say, “the both of you will, with minds like yours!”

Thinking of Hyde, a drake he had never even met, Juniper felt that he was not so alone after all and that his mother and father had been right—it was up to his generation, their generation, to outdo their elders and bring Sornieth ever closer to achieving feats once thought impossible. Placing his father’s tools aside would be a grave insult to their family’s legacy and to the dying wish of his mother.

So he traveled east from Dragonhome and barged into Hyde’s life without so much as a knock. The way he saw it, if the two of them represented Sornieth’s future, then they ought to work together to make sure it was a bright one. Hyde, starstruck by the presence of a Driscoll on his own front stoop, reluctantly accepted Juniper as his business partner—and, eventually, as his mate. When asked what drew him to Hyde romantically, Juniper had only this to say: “Well, he’s cute, en’t he?”

At present, they are focusing all of their efforts on bringing Feldspar into the modern world. To do this, they will work with local experts in magic, culture, and construction to design (and in some cases redesign) machines with the clan’s traditions and needs in mind.
