While conversations between clan members aren't as carefree as they used to be, most topics can still be breached. One, however, has become taboo, so much so that sometimes, it's hard to recall that it even happened.

Spectrum exists as a reminder to everyone under the roof of the clan that they have failed in the most crucial of ways. He rots in his cell, under all of those spells that Arkana refuses to lessen even at the cost of her already weak health, and says nothing, and does nothing, and yet feels so alive, so vigilant ever still, watching and waiting for something, anything, to get him off that leash. At least, that's what everyone assumes. There's no way to tell.

When talk turns to the subject of Spectrum, it is not uncommon for words such as unpleasant or vile or repellant to be used. Even though the consensus within the Clan is inclusivity despite species and elemental affiliation, there are those who speak of Spectrum in hushed whispers and go out of their way to avoid him. Not even the kindest, most tolerant dragon would wish to find themselves in the Mirror male's company, and Clan gossip is often rife with speculation centering around Spectrum and his deeds. Is he as awful as he acts? What happened to shape him into the dragon he is today? What does he get up to when he's not patrolling the halls of the Clan's hordes? Without any concrete evidence or answers, conjuncture has spread (more than once) like wildfire with Arkana having to step in to put a halt to the rumors.

As for Spectrum himself, well, he remains silent on all matters (not just questions centering on his motivations or his personal life). He is not fond of anyone's company, and will often hiss and spit when another dragon gets too close to him. No amount of cajoling or bribes or threat, save once when Arkana ordered him to partake in a Clan function for the Brightshine Jubilee, will make Spectrum socialize with other members of the Clan. It would be wrong to say that the rumors that continue to swirl around him are inaccurate but only because the truth is so much darker than that. Spectrum is a void into which all light fades. In him is the insatiable Hunger of his species coupled with a fiercer ambitious streak. While most would readily write him off as just a brute or a thug, Spectrum's crude nature belies a predatory intelligence. He hides in plain sight, and it suits him to be talked about so often as there are some (Arkana especially) who are tired of all of these rumors and so write off the stranger things that he does as gossip. One such activity is the horde that Spectrum keeps secret and separate to the Clan's own. He collects objects that share similar attributes to himself. From chunks of obsidian and rich nickel ore to little bottles of embers and wicked onyx scythes, Spectrum favors items that are dark and shiny as he is.

Spectrum does not see the Clan as Pack. They are prey to him, and that is the danger.

B A C K S T O R Y

Given its connotations to Light, Spectrum may seem like an odd name for a Shadowling until one meets the Mirror male in the flesh and gets an eyeful of the crystallized scales on his body and the oily patterns that adorn his wings. Perhaps if he had been brighter in his coloration, Spectrum's prism scales would throw off light instead of doing the opposite and devour it instead. He seems to soak in the rays and refract the colors on his body making him near invisible when he's on the hunt. In the absence of light, Spectrum's dark tones lends itself well to the shadows. In day or night, in the lands of the Shadowbinder or the realm of the Lightweaver, Spectrum has always been able to mask himself. He has the best of both worlds and will use it to his advantage.

In his youth, Spectrum belonged to a large pack of Mirror dragons. One that settled and hunted around the borders of the Tangled Wood and the Sunbeam Ruins. As is the way of the species, members came and went never settling in one area for too long. As numbers ebbed or climbed according to the seasons or the number of prey in the vicinity, so did the territory that belonged to the Clan. Some years, they would have vast lands to call their own while other years they would have to give way to the Beastclans or other dragons as they did not have the members to defend their territory. Their inability to claim recognition became a thorn in Spectrum's side. Those who knew that this was an irritation for him tried to explain that the Pack did not need territories. What was important was the hunt and nothing more.

Spectrum disagreed as in his mind their species was superior to the rest. They could survive in any terrain, did not suffer from communication barriers like the Fae and the Coatl and their hunting prowess was unmatched. They should band together to show the rest what they were capable of doing, but, alas, nobody else in the Clan shared Spectrum's views. He left in the middle of what was an uncharacteristically hot Summer season. Not one dragon remarked on this as they were used to individuals coming and going, but some hoped that Spectrum would find the recognition that he craved. What they should have been doing was praying for the opposite. Tired of living in the shade, Spectrum decided to make a drastic change.

Months after settling in the Sundial Terrace Spectrum became a member of Clan Ao. He took advantage of its open and welcoming nature and established himself as protector of the Clan's hordes. Even though Spectrum is, putting it mildly, not pleasant to be around, no one can dispute how good a fighter he is. Since becoming in charge of it, nothing has gone missing from the horde, which has gossips claiming that Arkana only tolerates Spectrum's presence because he is good at his job. What they are unaware of are his plans beyond that of his duties. For in the horde sits a key to one of the mysteries of the Hewn City. Spectrum sees it as his way to greatness.
