The Innsmouth Inn is lucky to have Lethe, because heaven help those who don't. She's always been the type to keep her head down and her hands busy, but that's not a matter of deference. No, it's proof that she won't quit until the job is done and dusted.

Unlucky for the folks who made her into this.

She was all flesh and blood many moons ago, working the long nights as a bartender in exchange for a dash of hope. Every tip clattering on the bar top was another step toward a different life, an escape from the same old something that never made her heart race like it should. Every drink she served brought her closer to the adventure she craved.

Those drinks were also how she met her mate. Tecolote had been one of her regulars for quite some time before he managed to slide beneath her guard and into her heart. A cowpoke with a heart of gold, he wanted out of the rough life and into something quieter. Maybe it wasn't the adventure Lethe thought she was after, but every night spent chatting with Tecolote at the bar made her dead certain it was the adventure she needed. To go somewhere that the bullets didn't riddle the walls, and the rustlers didn't leer at her when they thought she wasn't looking (or when they knew she was)...

Lethe hitched her dream to Tecolote’s , and to seal the deal, they made a trade. He passed over the pocket watch from his grandpappy, and in turn, she looped her precious copper locket round and round his neck until it sat steady along his collarbones. When it was time to go, when they had the funds to leave, they'd find each other and they'd trade those precious trinkets back.

Tecolote promised he would return to her. He swore up and down on every deity's name that she was home, and he wouldn't leave her.

She still wants it to be true with all her heart, despite all the time that's gone by.

He never did return from that run, and she's never been the same. Does she resent Tecolote for not being there to protect her when they strung her full of copper and clockwork? Not at all, because he would have stopped it in a heartbeat if he'd only known. The fact that he wasn't there only makes her more certain that something went wrong out on that run, something Tecolote wasn't strong enough to stop. There's no faulting him for that.

But she resents her clockwork body and the dragons that shaped it, insisted she take it, lied to her that it would make her broken heart easier to bear. Just because her heart pumps more oil than blood these days doesn't make it any lighter.

She keeps waiting, though. Waiting and watching and slinging drinks down the bar, because one day, she'll make it right. The pocket watch ticking against her chest hasn't failed yet, so neither will her faith.

Lethe will have her love again one day, and she'll have her revenge.
