There is a bar in the Crystal Pools. It only opens once a year, but when it does, dragons flock there by the hundreds. Every other bar remains dead and empty, and the more experienced owners simply don't bother opening that night. It has something they do not, and will never have.
Crystal tea from crystal pools Trade a mug of tea for your soul? Drink up, drink up, fall asleep Dream of memories that'll make you weep. Dragons go there to remember the ghosts of loves long lost: mothers, mates, siblings. But to do so requires the highest price of all. The soul. Some are turned away by this offer, and leave to their lairs, to sob themselves senseless over the pain. But others, others, others whose souls are already good as dead, they do not hesitate. There's yet to be a heart that's not fractured We haven't seen a soul devoid of pain Every day mortals are tormented By the memories of those so cruelly slain Do you hear them in your mind? The restless' last wishes and groans? Have you ever listened, then feared - - that the voices are your own? A mug of water, a twist of leaves Drink our tea at your own folly A touch of mint, a drop of tears Sip and force yourself before your fears. Hatchling, family, friends and mate You can meet them there at the ghostly gates You think your soul is too high a price to pay? Then leave, and return to weep with bitter hate. You've drunk our tea, you've seen their ghosts As our cozy fire burns down to its embers And then you're just one of them- - a lonely soul no one remembers. |

{Origins}
It’s said lost souls are attracted to the Crystal Pools. No one knows why. Perhaps because the crystalline scenery is a comfort, a memory, an encouragement. It is their only one. They have finally reached the end, but lost themselves somewhere along the way. This is where a strange breed of dragon is born: a magic formed from the restless spirits and the mystique atmosphere of the Pools. It’s almost as if the reflective beauty of the venue has chosen to give those forgotten souls a second chance, a chance to make things right - a chance to live the life they never got, to dream the dreams they never achieved… Not without a price, of course. To exist you need a purpose. To have a purpose, you need a soul. The Chalices of Memories aren’t exactly alive. They’re born of the shards of dreams and souls, and have no spirit of their own. They’re empty shells, made of the past lost spirits and the magic of the Crystal Pools. Because of this, they are always seeking to take the souls and dreams of others away, so they might have their own. By infusing the magic of the Pools with special tea leaves, they lure other dragons to their tavern. The crystals of the Pools are infused with dream magic. The leaves bear passage to the realm of ghosts. Combined together, the mixture steeps for 364 days, leaving the Chalices merely one day to capture as many souls as possible. How do they accomplish this? The price of their special brew is high. The price to see a loved one again: perhaps a parent, a mate, a child taken away far too early. The price is the soul. And so they collect and collect, sifting through each shard, living through the pain, hoping one day to find the one that will fulfill their yearning and make them whole again. |

They’re not born. They don’t hatch from eggs. Chalices are simply there. They wake up with no memories and no feelings, a blank slate with but one desire: to find their purpose. Because of this, the moment a Chalice starts feeling, it is considered their “birth”. Chalices have no souls of their own, giving them a very monotone personality somewhat akin to that of a newborn Nocturne’s. They can learn to interact with their surroundings by watching and imitating other dragons, but there is no feeling or purpose prompting them to do so. As a side effect of not having souls, Chalices also cannot wield magic. Instead, they absorb energy from the environment and of course, from the souls of others. The runes on their bodies will reflect their physical wellbeing. You know your Chalice is sick when their runes become a dull gray and they start looking transparent. The advised remedy is to let them feed on the souls of your enemies. And no, while it may seem like a great idea to sacrifice your own soul for the benefit of the pitiful patient, please do not feed them your soul. You can’t get it back. No dragon alive has ever heard a Chalice speak above a whisper. They are imperturbable, untouchable, and this simply adds to their aura of ethereal beauty. In a brawl, no dragon dares to touch one for fear their souls will be taken. Chalices spend the majority of their time brewing their special tea, which requires hawklike attention. It’s easy to earn what could be considered their “friendship” by providing them with the ingredients they need for their tea. It’s far easier to earn their aggression by attempting to disturb their tea-brewing time. While Chalices are not social dragons, they are great listeners and guardians. Give them a job and they will do it dutifully as long as you let them brew their tea peacefully. The best way to keep them feeling welcomed in your lair is to give them a nice, dry den with a small garden plot and access to trinkets from the Crystal Pools. While Chalices will not complain about what they’re being fed, we would like to remind you that the myth they survive on gems is false. Chalices are dragons, and dragons need actual food. Feed them rocks at your own folly. We won’t be responsible for the soul-stealing vomit. |
