I.
“Come sit by the fire, child!” “You can hold my hand — come here!”
The hatchlings are hard to corral at night — there are glimmer-moths to chase, and shadows that ebb and flow around their own soul lights.
But they always listen to their Grandpa.
When night falls and bad memories stir at the back of his mind, he shepherds the hatchlings back into the golden shield of the firelight.
Clutching a child to his chest, he spares a look heavenward, and thinks our camp echoes the night sky. In the darkness of the forest, roaring bonfires and glittering souls cluster like the constellations in the black vault above. The starry hatchlings orbit him like asteroids around a planetary body.
Once the children are all safe and accounted for — he has every name written on his mind — they sit in a comfortable pile and watch the golden flames together.
II.
Thought it’s been many years, nightfall brings a feeling of fear. The fear winds around everything like a cold white fog.
To keep the bad memories at bay, Ketchup takes an active hand with the hatchlings. Grandpa, Gramps, or Grampy Ketchup to all, he’s known for his gruff voice, gentle teasing, and pockets full of small wonders.
Do a magic trick! The hatchlings cry, and from his pockets Ketchup produces old acorns, little bits of star-moss, bird-shaped whistles, and more. If he’s pilfered the kitchens, he has sweets to share.
When he isn’t with the hatchlings, he can be found near his wife — and though his gaze is kindly, his eyes are full of fierce protection.
Never again, he thinks every night by the fire. He won’t fail these children ever again.
