alright, she agreed. alright. anything to be free from this terrible, biting cold.

she was kind. she did all that was asked of her. obeying, serving, hunting, killing, she did anything, and the cold was kept away. even when the black blood of her kin stained her teeth and dyed her claws an eerie dark, she obeyed.

was it enough?

darkness dripped from the gash she'd inflicted on her neck, writhing and twisting on the ground before forming swirls that pointed in the direction of one who bore the same faux-blood as her.

was it enough?

her teeth and claws a dark, dark black. irreversible. irredeemable. the worst kind of monster staring back at her when she gazed into the frigid pools she had once been submerged under.

"it's not enough."

they tried to return her to the cold. tried to dig hooks into her flesh, drag her under again—and they failed.

she had observed her predators enough for them to become prey.

she is a monster. and that's all she'll ever be.

a terrible, cunning monster, who now knows better than to pretend to be something she's not.
