Harbinger the unanticipated messenger
CUNNING | SPIRITED | GOOD-NATURED
The attack was over in seconds. Harbinger slid to the right, her scales scraping against the rough sandstone. Her breathing was ragged as she dove and twirled in a feeble attempt to avoid her attacker. Plumes of dust filled the air as the elephantine Ridgeback tumbled across the desert floor, oblivious to the plants crushed beneath her formidable size. If they had only attacked a week earlier, she wouldn’t have been in the middle of molting her spines! The altercation would have ended much quicker. But as luck would have it, the Ridgeback was forced to fight without her Stormcatcher-given natural defenses. With a roar of satisfaction, Harbinger gripped the limbs of her assailant and gave them a solid shake. A squeal of glee met her resounding growl and the Ridgeback bared her teeth – no, smiled – at the tiny hatchling held delicately in her claws. “FOOL!” She roared, a twinkle in her crimson eyes, “YOU DARE CHALLENGE ME?” A quick flick of her wrist sent the little hatchling shooting up into the bright blue sky. The large dragoness deftly caught the hatchling as it dropped back down to earth, tears streaming down its face from the endless giggling. “Again, please! Again, Bee!” The child chortled, raising its pint-sized claws and pretending to scratch at the Ridgeback’s dark scales. Harbinger squinted at the nickname, embarrassment flushing her already crimson face plates. Only the young ones had the spunk to call the colossal female by such a… miniature… name. “Ah I can’t, little one. I must go. There are other clans that are awaiting the news I bring.” She placed the disappointed hatchling on the sandstone floor and brought her face down low, so their eyes would be level. “But, I’ll tell you a secret.” Harbinger paused for effect, looking around suspiciously to catch any eavesdroppers, “The next time I come, I’ll be bringing surprises… Maybe a bit of Star Moss for the most well-behaved rascals I know.” The hatchling cheeped and bounced around on the ground below before racing off to, obviously, tell all its closest friends and probably some exhausted parents too. It was no matter. Harbinger would bring plenty of the delicious plant the next time she visited the Shifting Expanse, for adults and hatchings all. As she watched the little one race from one dragon in the clan to another, the garnet Ridgeback flared her wings and prepared to leave. She grabbed a satchel of supplies, strapping it to her enormous torso with ease. Just as she was about to leave, there was a small tap on her hind legs. Careful not to possibly step on any Lilliputian-sized dragons, Harbinger pivoted and craned her neck to see who was so politely asking for her attention. It was the same hatchling from before, anxiously shifting from foot to foot. “Momma says Har-bin-binge-er means something bad sometimes. Like a-an…. Oh-man. But it can also mean something good!” The child blurted, “I think it means something good. Because, every time you come I always get to play and have so much fun!” Zippers and buttons clinked as Harbinger took a step back and cocked her head at the little one, astonished at their words. The herculean ridgeback was so often received with looks of alarm and fear due to her sheer size and coloration that she didn’t entirely know how to react to such a kind statement. Harbinger held out a single claw and winked at the hatchling, with a smile wider than the Abiding Boneyard where she was born on her maw. “Thank you, youngling.” She nodded graciously, her wings unfurling. With one last smile (and maybe a little wave too), Harbinger continued on her journey as an emissary – but of course not before shouting one last message to the hatchling below. “And don’t forget, I’m bringing you all the star moss you could ever eat!” |
