Elekáno was born for the title, possessing all the wisdom, grace, and chivalry of a proper prince. The kingdom loved their heir apparent. His younger brother, Vasarya, lived in the inescapable reach of his brother's perfect shadow.

Some said that Vasarya had no soul, that he had been consumed by a dark spirit, fallen prey to an enchantment. But no monster stole his soul—it was heart that Vasarya lacked. Having a heart turned Elekáno into a gilded shell, full of pomp and circumstance and pleasantries, forever pandering to the wishes of the masses. What happened next wasn't murder, it was the weeding of a garden.

The details of Vasarya's ascent to the throne have long since been lost to time, and he will keep his secrets as long as his forest kingdom stands. History tells of swordfights and poison, assassins in the night and lies whispered into gullible ears. He gave himself the name Valyatar, in the style of the Numenórean kings of old—divine king.

By all accounts, Valyatar, lord of the mountain woods, was a tyrant, a merciless ruler who tolerated no weakness. But mad he was not, even as the shadows drew across his kingdom and the air turned sour, as the rivers became slow-moving swamps and monsters found homes among the trees.

He would stand in no shadows but the ones he chose.
