Warden

Created by the Icewarden himself, Wardens are creatures from old myths believed to haunt the Fortress of Ends. Not quite alive, those chosen haunt the depths of the mountains for millennia, keeping watch over the frozen prisoners that stare sightlessly from their prisons of ice.

While it is a Warden’s job to make sure that no prisoner ever breaks free and escapes, they are trapped themselves, adorned with chains to remind them of their duty, and each one carrying an hourglass with endless sand ticking away the seconds in their infinite penance.

Prisoners

No dragon is quite sure of what crime could warrant such cruel punishment as being part of the Icewarden’s collection. Priests warn their flock against doubting and questioning the gods. Kings and queens tell of overthrowing a righteous ruler, and replacing them with a power-hungry farce. Slowly, each clan crafted its own set of laws, threating any deviant clan members with a punishment worse than death.

Although it is known only to the Icewarden what crimes were committed by those trapped below the ice, many clans have been resigned to the fact that, as they grow bigger and expand deeper into the mountain, inevitably there will come the day when a crumbling wall will reveal the empty hallways formed by sightless statues, their bodies frozen in horrific screams as they pleaded for mercy their god would never give them.

Even more dangerous is the presence of the Wardens trapped alongside their charges.
Most were driven mad by millennia roaming the dark and quiet catacombs. Those are often relieved of their duties with great cost to the unfortunate clan; and no matter what, one day another will take the place of the fallen Warden, walking the hallways just as its predecessor did, counting the seconds to their downhill spiral into madness.

Awake

While Ghost’s sudden release from his icy slumber was unexpected at best, as the months went by and no more prisoners awakened, his presence was written off as an anomaly best left forgotten.

But with the sudden magical surge awakening all over Sornieth, the gods’ latent powers were not the only thing to rise from their slumber. Cave-ins all over the lower catacombs released two prisoners yet again – the imperials not as tame as the harmless guardian hatchling that shared their fate.
The two imperials were found entwined together, their chains fractured by the falling ice as the female curled protectively around her mate. Attempts at communication seemed futile - they either predated common draconic, or were so far gone into madness as to be completely feral.

The bindings still around the female’s body did little to contain her, as she snapped and roared at any that tried to approach the duo.
Her companion was in much worse condition; his wings had been eaten away by the ice and deteriorated as to be nearly useless, icicles and chains weighting him down as he dragged them after himself. Though not tamer, his behavior seemed lethargic – with a visibly upset Arqam lamenting that such a good specimen would wake up only to perish right after – and the bindings around his head suggested that he might have been purposefully blinded prior to his sentence being dealt.

Unable to contain or control the newly-awakened prisoners, the clan hastily converted a section of the catacombs into an actual cell in which to contain them – a place in which to keep the clan safe from them until the imperials can be further studied and, hopefully, reasoned with.

Protector

Adrestia was never like the other hatchlings. Rather than preen and strut with the other imperials, she was more interested in wrestling with the lower caste dragons in her clan.
Leaving her clan at an early age, she delighted in the simple joy of flying and travelling to new places. To keep herself fed, she became a bodyguard for hire – her imposing size was enough to discourage most attackers from engaging in direct combat, and over the years she did eventually pick up some fighting skills.
While hardly a pacifist, Adrestia didn’t enjoy violence; however, she would fight to her last breath to protect those she saw as needing her aid – paid or not. One such dragon was Phobos.

It baffled her that the male was even alive. His gentle disposition made him an easy target for those wanting to cash in on his gifts, and he barely seemed to mind when he got hustled – the affable imperial would just smile and move on, glad that his patients were well enough to even fly away with his belongings.
It was no surprise when Adrestia joined him in his wanderings.

Failuree

Adrestia fought her charge every step of the way when he stopped to aid a wounded longneck warrior.
She protested – loudly – when he went along like a lamb to the slaughter to their tribe.
She screamed until her throat was raw when they took him away.

During the trial there was little she could do to protect him. The only reason she was spared to watch from sidelines was by sheer luck – she had been part of a hunting expedition far enough away not to be spotted by the Gaolers raiding the clan.
The shame of failing her charge – her friend – burned in her chest as she watched him being accused of crimes he didn’t commit, being charged with a sentence far too cruel for such a gentle creature.

Days later when they dragged his out of the gaol – stumbling with a bloody cloth tied around his eyes – any thoughts she might have had of an escape plan fled her mind as soon as she saw his blood tinting the snow. With a furious roar, she charged through the imposing tundras guarding Phobos, their impressive bulk no match for her raw desperation to reach him.
By the time she finally reached his side the fighting ha taken its toll on her. Spent, she collapsed in front of Phobos, shielding him with her body in a last desperate attempt of protecting him.

As the ice slowly covered her body, she wrapped herself around him, her last breath spent in a sob as she tried to apologize to him. The last thing she saw was a glimpse of his kind smile before both of them were swallowed by darkness.
