Alarianthe lived alone with her father at first, in his little outpost camp a few miles away from the Dead Zone he was assigned to study. Her father was a Herald to the Arcanist, and would collect samples of the flora and fauna in the Dead Zone to send back to the Arcanist as he slowly purged the land. It seemed that they were winning, the magic flow slowly returning to the land and the Shade's inluence being pushed back as only small creatures and plants were left containing it. Then her father was murdered by a horrible hulking beast. Alarianthe survived only because her father sensed the danger and hid her away.

Grief-stricken she offered to take her father's place as Herald, and though this was a brazen thing to do and she likely didn't fully understand what she was asking, the Arcanist agreed and made her a Herald, charging her with three tasks as he did so. First, she was to travel to a clan in the Lightweaver's domain called Amarayne and seek out the gathering of Heralds there. Second, she was to find the dragon Copernicus of that same clan and keep watch over him. Third, the Arcanist told her, was that she report to Lothar, the wisest and oldest of the Heralds of Amarayne that someone was targeting servants of the gods; Heralds, Aspects, and Exalts.

Carried on the back of her father's former Missionary, she soon came to the clan that the god had told her of. They were expecting her, as she had written ahead, but she'd only explained that she was arriving. Everything else had to be delivered in person. She relayed her message, found the old mage and joined the growing band, but still she did not know why the Arcanist would send her here of all places.

She was very young when her father died and she became a Herald, and she was very close to him. During the first days of her life in Amarayne she was melancholy, angry, and quiet. At night she cried herself to sleep because her daddy would never read her bedtime stories again, or sing lullabies, or rub her head until she fell asleep. Time slowly healed the wounds but the scars of losing her only parent to such a sudden and violent death were deep and she would never be quite alright about it. Thankfully she had the support of a clan that had also known hurt and pain, which eased her heart.

Despite her tragic past, Alarianthe's heart is much like her father's, and she takes a more curious and analytical approach to the shade. Of course she still hunts and destroys the Shade, but she'll also capture and study small bits of it and send samples back home for study. She knows spells that can calm Shade somewhat and is adept at containment and sealing. It's important to her that they learn about the Shade and how it works, as well as keeping it under control. It's not uncommon for her to disagree with her peers, though they get strangely quiet when she points out that they are allies with an Order largely made up of hugely powerful Shade.

She still is not certain what her god wants with the mage Copernicus, though she believes she is meant to be a bodyguard for him because he and his family are the last to carry the Aetheromancer Gift. As the Arcanist was the one to create the Gift, it makes sense that he would want to protect it. Still, he has not outright stated his intentions, so she must watch and wait. Copernicus is flattered that the Arcanist cares enough to assign a Herald specifically to him, but hopes that the god isn't making some sort of a play to get to him as he already has enough on his plate, thank you very much.
