Biography

Horus
Desert Vagabond
The barren desert dunes were almost devoid of life, except for a single dragon, making his way across the arduous terrain towards a collapsed pyramid, merely a speck in the distance. The sandstorm scathed the skin underneath the dragon’s spotted plumage, making him wince, but he continued his trek with determination in his fluorescent pink eyes.
Keeping his wings tucked tightly against his body (If he were to open his wings, he’d be carried back miles from the winds), it was hard to see the tools he kept in a small purse strapped to his abdomen. Within were multiple forms of currency, a few bottles of water, excavation tools, and a large cavity presumably for holding his findings.
You see, Horus was no ordinary Coatl - he came from a long line of Egyptian Draconics, a general term to describe dragons born and raised from wealthy or high of power egyptian families. Horus himself was supposedly from a distant cousin of the Pharaoh.
Horus had recently picked up a tip from an old friend that within the pyramid was a grand jewel, large enough and rare enough to make it so Horus would never have to pickpocket or spend hours searching ancient ruins looking for artifacts ever again. He could live a life of luxury in the comfort of his solitude.
This was Horus’s last job, and nothing would stand in his way.
~
After many hours, Horus finally arrived at the basin of the pyramid. He crept inside, shaking the sand off, and opened his wings with a spectacular flourish. Gliding down farther into the pyramid, he began to feel slightly uneasy. All around him was clearly advanced architecture, although the book he’d read on pyramids in the area had stated that it was one of the oldest pyramids in the area, picked clean of it’s treasures - a time far before these advanced types of pyramids emerged.
Upon examination, Horus’s heart sank to see that part of what the book had said was right - The walls, which had once been covered with gold, silver, and rare jewels, had been violently torn down in the desperate search for riches.
Horus frowned, opening his pyramid guide to make sure he was in the right place, when a scrap of paper fell from the book. Horus glanced carefully at it, realizing that it was handwritten and on a different type of paper - so clearly not part of the book. The paper had notes and info on most of the rare jewels in the area, when he found a piece on the one he was looking for.
“The Bleeding Eye”
“The rarest desert jewel, currently priced at 50 million treasure to whoever finds it. However, despite multiple desperate attempts to find it, the only one who will be able to find the jewel is an heir to the Egyptian Draconic throne. However, this jewel comes with a terrible curse-”
The page was ripped off just before the curse was stated, which annoyed Horus to an unimaginable extent. Although, part of his excitement had been renewed with the thought that he might be the heir to find the jewel, he had a newfound dread - what kind of curse?
Horus squeezed his eyes shut as many possibilities flooded through his brain, all the awful types of curses you’d hear in myths and fables. He shook his head, remembering that no matter what type of curse it was, he’d be the richest dragon in the world.
~
Wandering through the catacombs, he couldn’t stop the flood of thoughts about what might happen whenever he took the ‘Bleeding Eye’.
In fact, because he was so busy thinking of what would happen, he almost missed the jewel itself. Thankfully, his treasure-hungry eyes locked onto it like a missile homing in on it’s target in a path of destruction.
The jewel sat on a pedestal right in front of him, so Horus was right about his lineage. Driving his hesitation away, he lifted the jewel up and placed it in his bag.
The moment he touched the cool, slick surface of the stone, he felt an odd twinge - as though something had eaten away all his happiness and kindness, and for a moment, he felt absolutely nothing but numbness.
Seconds later, a twisted happiness stabbed at him, making him laugh. Why should I have hesitated? I am the greatest dragon in the world. Nobody can match my sheer perfection.
Lifting his head slightly higher, He exited the pyramid.
~
By the time Horus got back, all he could think about was how amazing he was. There was a tiny part of him that still knew the truth, but it was quickly quieted by the louder voice of confidence and narcissism.
However, as an edgy adult who animates once said, ‘Who knew vanity and stupidity were so closely related?’
Horus decided to show off the jewel to everyone he met, telling them a heroic tale of how he found the jewel (that was highly exaggerated).
He quickly learned his lesson after showing it off to a Wildclaw in one of the stalls in a bazaar.
“You found this jewel? Huh. Thought only an heir could find it.” The Wildclaw said quietly, his eyes devoid of emotion.
“Well, it’s because I’m next in line for the throne.” Bragged Horus, smiling.
“Hmph. You know the curse on that jewel, right?” The Wildclaw asked, and Horus nodded.
“So you know about the Binding Curse of Veia.”
At this, Horus paused, and shook his head. “No sir.”
The Wildclaw spoke so softly Horus had to strain to catch every word.
“Back when this entire bazaar was just a wasteland ruled under the Egyptian Draconian monarchy, there was a queen by the name of Veia. Veia was one of those dragons that magic flowed from to an extent you could feel it standing across the room radiating from her. However, she decided only to ever use her gift once. She knew the common folk didn’t share her belief of vanity over everything else, so she used her powers to enchant the world's largest ruby, usually worn on the current dragon possessing the throne. It made that dragon share her values - it was a way of punishing her subjects, by making them have a vain ruler forever.
After hundreds of years, the people rebelled, and overthrew the monarchy, sealing the jewel within the queen’s pyramid forever.”
The Wildclaw drew in a shaky breath.
“That thing-”, he paused, pointing at the jewel with a disgusted look on his face. “Should have been found by me. I would have taken it into the desert and destroyed it. But you had to go and find it.”
The dragon smiled, twitching slightly, reaching for Horus.
“I’ll just have to kill you and destroy it anyways.” He snarled.
The dragon wrenched the jewel out of Horus’s claws, and begin to mercilessly beat him with his tail. Horus felt his bones snapping like twigs (As he was not very strong), as he was whipped about like a toy.
Just before everything went dark, he saw a violet Coatl bearing the same, jaguar-spotted plumage dart at his assailant.
~

Horus currently lives in the Clan of the Night Watchers, studying relics and artifacts that his partner Patrice brings back. While the jewel was lost, Horus made a full recovery, and yet, Horus still has his curse. He was brought back to the clan by the dragon who saved him, Octavia, who has been helping kill his vanity a little bit through cynical remarks, although the two are very close.
