The wall was hastily built. A certain amount of mud was okay, mamma was a bogsneak afterall and seemed to relish the stuff even if the young pearlcatcher didn't, but there was too much mud and the stream was still swelling with late winter rain.

"It's not gonna hold." Zuphlas looked at the mud sloughing off between the logs they'd jammed at the water entrance of the labyrinth.

Mamma had more confidence. "It'll hold." She winked at him. "But just in case, do you want to go up to the high lair for the night? Your dad is already working on the fire."

"Yes!" A big grin plastered itself across his face despite the mud and chill. The high lair meant games and stories while the family waited out the storm. He could already feel the warmth from the sturdy clay hearth. Lying on the stones and soaking in the heat would be amazing. His thoughts screeched to a halt as quick as they started. "My tree is gonna wash away!" Mamma had planted it the year he was born, and the quince sapling was special because they were the same age.

"Go get it." She encouraged. "It can stay outside and get wet but still be safe."

"Yes!" The grin was back. "Hold this." He shoved his pearl at her and ran off to find his potted tree. It was at the central lair which happened to be somewhat underwater. The little tree, above water when he'd left it earlier in the day, was now a few pathetic sticks poking out the of the brown flood. The waterlogged pot was almost more than he could move, but he tugged it along and they struggled out of the pool which was the courtyard and up the path towards the high lair.

Pa met him along the path and traded Zuphlas his pearl for his tree. "I can't believe you left this behind again. For a plant! What have I told you about setting down your pearl? Do you want to loose your memories? You're a pearlcatcher, not a treefisher mucking about for a----"

"Mamma says you only stress about it cause you're a Light pearlie." He interrupted. "I didn't just set it down, I gave it to mamma!"

Pa made a face which meant trouble for someone later, but the topic was dropped. They were at the lair now and Zuphlas took back the tree so he could arrange it outside the lair entrance. He put on his best form, clutching the large pearl in one hind paw as he should, while awkwardly shuffling the pot into place. Traction was impossible with one paw occupied and a heavy planter on a slope, but he struggled on anyway. His father let out a put-upon sigh, but left the young pearlcatcher to the task.
