B I O G R A P H Y

Nightshade’s egg was found by the side of a tower of ice that had somehow spiraled up in the midst of the Ashfall Waste. Svanda was the one who found it, and he carried it home to the clan as was his job. His egg was put into a nesting parent’s nest to warm with the others. It was interesting to watch hatch, as ice eggs melt around the hatchling. And so Nightshade was born, blinking his eyes open in a puddle of his egg water.

Soon enough, things would turn out that even being born in the nesting grounds of the Cursed Clan can force a curse upon you. Though he was born with base colors, as he matured to dragonhood his patterns changed. Scales of grey crawled up his legs, covering sections of him completely. Darker triangles of purple were jagged across his torso. The most notable thing, is Nightshade’s wings. Toxin across his soft yellow wings, turning parts of it almost the same purple as his body. But that wasn’t all (if it was, Nightshade really couldn’t count it as a curse, just a new design).

His curse came in the shape of his entire body. During one day, while playing in a nearby grassland that a Nature dragon had sprung up during a bout of homesickness, the grass around Nightshade began to sicken and curl up dead. He scrambled out of the way, but the dark rocks underneath him cracked. Trying to avoid touching the ground as much as he could, he rushed to Meenah and Kankri’s nest. The two looked at each other, and nodded in unison. Nightshade was toxic now, and they would just have to figure out how to help him.

_Familiar Bonding_

____The 2018 Trickmurk Circus was the very first holiday Nightshade was around for, starting the day after his egg melted. Nothing specific happened to him (he’d come to understand this was semi normal, but after seeing so many of his clanmates gain different colorations during one, he thought it was par for the course). After seeing Caldwyn (and hearing that the ice had come during the Crystalline Gala), and Dahlia (seeing the fins and double horns appearing on her body during the Wavecrest Saturnalia), Nightshade was feeling rather left out. But, never fear, as the Trickmaster General, the Shadowbinder herself had something else in mind for her dear, favored clan. Favored for her beloved daughter, Bloodmoon, who lived there.

____What happened was simple. Bloodmoon was escorting Nightshade out (for this was before the curse of his toxins truly came upon him) towards Joxar’s shop. It was open, and she wanted to make this festival be one of the best. As it was his first at the time. With a satchel full of Shimmering Pinecones, and a tiny guardian on her back, Bloodmoon flapped to the Isle of the Carnival (the isle that only resurfaces every time it’s the Shadow festival). As she traded in Pinecones, one of the many Spirits there (a bat shaped creature with the shadow emblem for a face) began to fly around Nightshade’s head, landing on his shoulder and nuzzling against him. A low laugh as she spilled out 35 of the pinecones in trade for the beast. On the flight home (not that long considering Bloodmoon’s then-imperial size), Nightshade and the animal (now dubbed Saya) bonded and became fast friends.

____Nightshade thought that his trials were over once his scales came in and he stopped dissolving the ground beneath him. But oh how wrong he was. During the Rockbreaker’s Ceremony of 2018, Nightshade’s body began to be affected once more. On the creases of his wings, outcroppings of crystals and pebbles began to form. His wings somehow still worked (it seemed that his biological acidity kept them in a constant state of melting and reforming), but still the rocks spread.

____He supposes it wasn’t all that much of a shock in all fairness. Even as the double familiars came (one of them screaming of wrongness in every way but literal), even as his clanmates distracted themselves with soft silk and gems, with glowing halos of enchanted rocks, Nightshade was finding out a plot to take down Mordit. But oh (but oh), dear reader, that is a story for another day.
