Thea’s Desolate Shield
Bane of Royalty
Little Zakai was born to a shadow clan who loved him very much. This did not save him from being packed up and told to shove off in the most polite of ways when his insistent flirting had finally gotten them all into graveness with neighboring groups. He couldn’t help it if the leader’s children had been breathtaking or if that mage’s son was heart stopping gorgeous, he likes pretty things. So he parted from his group to cause mayhem and headaches for someone else.
His home clan probably thought he would be smart about whom he flirted with after that, but they would be sorely mistaken. Not long after that the now young adult came upon a large group of dragons that he quickly learned was actually a small kingdom, with taverns, a castle and the whole lot. Well it took him less than an hour to find the princess “on accident” and have her little heart set a flutter. When the royal guard found them the ensuing chase was both amusing and damaging to the kingdoms market. He doesn’t regret it, that princess was a real firecracker.
That kingdom must have sent word to all the other kingdoms because it wasn’t long before he had a wanted poster, he looked quite dashing if did say so himself. So in order to avoid capture and the occasional bounty hunter, he traveled with wandering clans who were rather taken with his flowery words and wit. It wasn’t till he found himself alone on a well-traveled road that he met the love of his life. There he was trying to get a wheel from a rather loaded cart unstuck, the most beautiful dragon Zakai had ever seen. Sky blue scales from his wings to his toes with a white underbelly. Light green eyes found his dark purple, and Zakai was for once in his life speechless.
The male ridgeback asked him for some help which he gladly gave; heaving the cart out of the rut it was in. Zakai attempted to flirt like he usually did, and to his utter surprise and delight the other gave as good as he got. The two began to travel together, Zakai helping out with the less than savory types as well as with the cart pulling. He soon had the ridgeback’s eye, and they fell in love, it took a while but they got there.
That Wonderful Few Years
Zakai and his lover where happy, content really, but when they came upon two orphaned skydancers they couldn’t just leave them. With two daughters added to the mix Zakai had never been happier. The little girls swiftly fit into the everyday life of traveling merchants, helping set up when they came to market places, learning to fix wheels, and how to fib about the amazing product they had. Zakai was rather proud of his life now, may not be as exciting as before but it was his and he was happy.
It was years later, their daughters’ young adults now, but still traveling, because what are a few years to a dragon. Still strong and nimble was Zakai, still pulling carts, still loving his family. However he never forgot about the bounty on his head, so when he saw his poster up on a few trees near their next stop, he dearly hoped that they were just old and no one remembered him. He was a fool for thinking so. The family entered fine, selling what they could then going on their way, his daughters where rough housing up ahead and his love was sauntering along beside him. They bedded down for the night, if it weren’t for his eldest keen nose they might have just suffocated to death. The fire was huge by the time they were all up, so large in fact that flying would be ill advised, so they ran. They ran till they were met with another great wall of fire, seeing no other option the family took to the sky, his beautiful lover’s wings quickly caught alight. The young skydancers started stomping and throwing dirt to put them out. Zakai knew this was his entire fault, the older two looked at one another, said I love you once more, than covered their daughters with their bodies.
When the fire settled and the smoke cleared, Zakai was the only one left breathing, his wonderful daughters strangled by the smoke, and his beautiful lover nothing but ash. He grew numb, unfeeling to the world, why he asked the gods, why did you let me live while my heart has turned to ash. Zakai continued to travel, never talking much besides a grunt or one worded sentences. He never interacted with another dragon besides fights where he would take out all the inner pain and anger he held out on the unfortunate soul. He carried on like this right up until he met her, Thea, the one whose back was unguarded from the beast clan member who was about to take her out. He must have been running on instinct because he jumped to her aid. When the battle was finished and they were the only two standing, Thea started to leave, she did what she set out to do and was going home. Zakai followed her, all the way back to a cove with caves carved into the cliff. He was home now.
