Kasee had long since forgotten his name held the meaning of shining as he was so often shrouded in the shadows of those greater than himself. Hatching a few moments after his stunning sister huddled against his mother’s warm embrace his first blurry visions were of Charlie and the dragons surrounding her. He instinctively wanted to get closer to his littermate but was held back by the ever growing crowd blocking her from his unstable legs. Instead his mother, Berry, wrapped him closer to her belly with her long tail. He dragged his gaze away from his sister to take in his mother. To his young eyes she was beautiful and he could see where Charlie got it from. He felt a dull disappointment when he brought his eyes down his small form to find no opal decorating his own hide. As much as playing with Charlie was fun whenever any other dragon came by they acted as if he didn’t exist. Finding it futile to outshine her at even a few weeks old he instead found himself returning to his mother to hear the tales she had of great imperials of the past. She told him he was just as beautiful as his sister and that she loved them both equally. Kasee secretly wished she loved him more though. He wanted that love to himself.

Charlie took to flying at an unusually young age. She was a prodigy. It surely made their dad, Hikaru, proud. She showed off small tricks that would normally be mundane but was considered brilliant simply for the novelty of such a young dragon accomplishing it. She seemed to make a great point in blinding the dragon’s below by reflecting the light into their eyes. Any congrats stuck to the roof off his mouth. How would she possibly hear him over her adoring fans? Swishing away the young dragon found solace in learning all he could. He spent time reading as his sister learned how to dance alongside the Skydancers. Kasee squinted through old translations as she performed tricks with the Spirals. He discovered old cave systems as she decorated a nest all of her own. No one even noticed him leaving the clan. Who cared that he was barely a child. He would pave his own way to glory. The furthered he burrowed in the rot the more unusual markings he found. If he could find something valuable here surely this would give cause for his clanmates to adore him too.

Kasee spent a great deal of time around his mother growing up so it was clear to him where the differences layed. She trimmed her great mane daily and spent time grooming it whereas his seemed to be more feather than anything else. From afar it appeared a normal imperial mane but upclose it very obviously spoke of his Coatl blood. There was no need to trim a mane of feathers. Along with that he knew the ins and outs of the Coatl’s native tongue. The linguistics behind it while interesting did not seem very practical. No longer a child there was no need to share jokes with his sister in the tongue. Even with his traits from the Coatl blood Kasee prided himself greatly on imperial heritage. He took a great deal of time to study the secrecies his mother even hid from his father. He doubted his sister even took the times to learn every detail of imperial burial rites. His perfectionist qualities over his studies was very reminiscent of imperials as well. He could see it in his sister even if she hadn’t noticed it. From the way his father-and to be honest the way others-seemed to avoid talking with him it was made clear Kasee took after Imperial mannerisms. Outside of his sister and mother dragons seemed unable to read his emotions and tone. He used few words not needing to fill the air with his voice to get his feelings across. Kasee was relieved that Charlie always understood the meaning behind his words. She was his sister and he loved her even if she forced him to work four times as hard to recieve any praise and attention. It wasn’t her fault after all she was born beautiful. He simply took too much after his father.

While Charlie took great pride in her nest Kasee could not say as much. His nest was simply a pile of roots for sleeping. The walls had been covered in papers full of his writings. To keep Dev and Silent off his tail he did minor mechanic work. Fix an object here make a light there. No suspicion if the loner did their part. If a dragon wandered into his liar they would not make heads or tails of his writings. They were all in the long ‘forgotten’ language he discovered in the caves a great many years ago. It was an ancient language never known to dragonkind but by the Shade. Even as a maturing dragon he understood the dangers and fear of the Shade.Though the ways they were described he had never imagined them beings capable of a written language. He kept this discovery to himself. What had Clan Lobhadh ever done to deserve his loyalty? They could rot with the putrid pus claiming the land for all he cared. If not for his family he would not have even bothered staying within their territory. While Charlie’s walls got more and more covered with paint Kasee dove deeper and deeper into his secret caves. To places the light had never touched before. Where no dragon had ever had the chance to breathe. He whispered among the dark maws letting them lick at his scales as they granted him further access into their domain. Everytime he found it harder to pull himself away to return to his sister. She always seemed pleased at his return and insisted on grooming his mane. Even if she filled her nest with words only regarding herself he would take it for now. She may be selfish but he loved her. He just had to keep telling himself that. It was becoming a chore but he loved her. Her words were no longer warm to his heart but he loved her. He felt a pull back to the shadows not her annoyingly reflective scales, but he knew he had to love her. Why else would he still be here?

Before either hatchlings had to time to even contemplate their futures Charlie was once again swept away from Kasee. His father told him the adults had important business to attend to with her. His mom said he would be next that he was just a late bloomer. He didn’t want to be a late bloomer. He wanted to be big enough to remain by his sister’s side. They hadn’t finished their game of capture the Beastclan yet. As she continued under the watchful eyes of those respected in the clan Kasee helped his mom move their stuff to their new nests. They were too old to live with their mother anymore. Why was everyone leaving him behind? What would it take to catch up? He wasn’t a swift flier. In fact he found flying to be displeasurable. It was just a reminder of his own shortcomings. He wasn’t as sturdy as Charlie with her superior genetics. He acted as if studying under the mechanics were fulfilling but no one really battered an eye at them. It was not a skill particularly honored in the Scarred Wasteland. Charlie seemed to revel in bothering him at night while he was scouring through his individual research. She boast of her accomplishment and pester him into giving her ideas to outmatch all her competition. For a second he was foolish enough to think he was wanted maybe even needed by his peers. He was bitterly reminded that this was not his fate at Charlie’s assessment. She blinded the crowd with her over the top performance taking credit for all his ideas in the art of war. She received a place of honor and respect while he remained an unnoticed shadow. No one would appreciate him here. There was no point. He tried remain as encouragement to his sister over the years as she climbed the ranks but he felt absolutely no joy here. Her happiness was poison in his mouth.

The twins were both full grown dragons now. The age of play long gone. Charlie would forever dance in the sky a beautiful glimmering light for the clan. There was no room to shine here for Kasee. It was his time to escape this prison. His oh-so-brilliant sister hadn’t even notice him pack all his belongings and research over the last month. Hadn’t notice over the years he practically lived in the Shade infested caves. The one thing she had noticed was the being attached to him. She simply thought it a strange looking blackened scar on his foreleg and torso. Far from it. It was a part of the Shade he carried with him. He could always hear their whispers with his new found companion. A being seeing him worthy of taking to. The night of his planned freedom he sidetracked to the eyesore of a nest his sister kept. Bright colors clashing everywhere and a mockery of feathers from her appalling clanmates lining her nest. It made him want to rip the nest to shreds. Kasee was straight to the point and told Charlie this was goodbye. She seemed slow on the uptake and could not see past her own snout to fathom why he would want his own life. To ease her into the idea he pointed out that Imperials were Lightweaver's first children and he was simply returning home. To where he belonged. His red eyes not keeping him rooted to the crater like his sister’s did. He planned to study the Beacon of the Radiant Eye the origin of Imperials. This was only partially true. The Shade had spoke of many dragons like him. Forced into the shadows of their own clan. That they were coming together under a new leader Rextyl. Kasee only need to bide his time in this new clan as the pieces got set in place. He had been wasting away here so what was a few more years in a place with enough light for him to shine?
