Adopted. You'd best not listen too much to him; his silky words are nothing but lies. He goes around to other lairs giving false prophecies. He stays long enough to enjoy the pampered life of a prophet, then slips away in the night when the dragons get suspicious. He returns home when he needs to lay low, but he doesn't do much work. He once tried to play the false prophet game at his home lair, but too quickly he was found out. He'd rather not relive the fury from Sanderson, and Laped that was born from his lies. He is capable of detecting the most hidden of falsehoods, so he is allowed in during certain domestic diplomatic meetings as an adviser. He does travel with Laila, but he always breaks away before she reaches another den. He's pretty sure that even the tolerate and peaceful Agoradi would kill him if he threw a lair into chaos that had active negotiations or trade occurring. While Agoradi does believe that Merlyin is a boon to the lair, Sanderson firmly believes he's nothing but trouble and would have Merlyin exiled on the spot.
