BIOGRAPHY


XXXMaelstrom is a wise, knowledgeable, hard-working dragon who is highly respected in the Calyx Coven for his position as Head Healer. This gentle giant wasn't always a key part in the Coven, though. He was born into a different clan, one where every dragon is given a particular profession at birth by the clan's council members. Individuals have no say in the matter and cannot change the decision made for them as they grow older. As the hatchlings grow into fledgelings, they are taught how to do their chosen job by older dragons until they are eventually apprenticed to a particular dragon of the same profession.

XXXWhen he was born, Maelstrom, who prefers to go by Strom because he believes his full name has negative connotations, was chosen to be a Warrior. His large size made it difficult for him to maneuver easily enough to follow the instructions of the older dragons teaching him to fight. By the time he was finally apprenticed to a Nocturne named Malachi, Strom realized his true calling was to be a Healer. He wanted to mend and fix broken bones and cuts, treat illness, and eradicate sickness, not be the cause of them! But the young Imperial was confused because all of his life he'd been told he could not be anything but a Warrior.

XXXMalachi was tougher on Strom than any of his previous teachers, possibly because the Nocturne realized his pupil didn't have his heart in his training. They spent hours every day practicing different moves and techniques, over and over and over again until Maelstrom couldn't breathe from the exertion. Yet no matter how much he practiced, Strom was only able to master the simplest of fighting techniques. The tail slaps and screaming insults he endured from Malachi every time he failed did not help, either. Eventually, Maelstrom snapped. He couldn't take the training any longer and, without thinking too much about it, he ran away.

XXXFrom there, Strom's life only got better. He traveled all across Sornieth, meeting all kinds of Healers and Mages. Every dragon who knew anything about healing found themselves bombarded by questions from Maelstrom. His mind was a sponge when it came to learning about healing. At one point during his travels, he met his Ancient Fungus Familiar, Grumpy, who today provides him with certain spores that can be used in poultices. Strom is incredibly happy with his life today, even if he doesn't happen to get along too well with the Head Guard, Balthadios.
