When she comes for you, you are certain that you will know death at her hands. She weaves shadows like they are physical things, turning them to nets that knot around you; you feel nothing, but you are immobilized anyway. The glowing yellow eyes before you are not reassuringly warm; they are cold, cold as the winter sun. But when she is near enough to the light, your gaze catches on something familiar - a black metal collar with an inlaid blue jewel. A jewel which pulses faintly, like the beating of a heart. You see the yellow eyes change, their light reflecting on the stone, and then they move to fix on you once again. The shadows around you pull tighter and you are trapped in a tight embrace you somehow cannot feel. "You have seen her," she hisses, and her voice curls out slow and silky like smoke. You wait, holding your breath for more, but there is none. Many seconds pass, and you count out how many times you hear yourself breathe, to reassure yourself you're still alive. All at once the web of shadows around you retreats and you see the tendrils snaking back into the dark. The faint blue glow of her collar fades as a scaled paw covers the gem, and then she is moving away from you so quickly you cannot possibly follow. Then she is gone, and you are alone again. Raum is a name known only to few, now, and she prefers it that way. Though she follows the laws of the land as they are spoken, in the deepest parts of her mind there is something that has rotten her to the core, leeching out all that gives her purpose and replacing it with something else, something hungry. She consumes without thought, but sometimes at her neck the faint beat of the gem reminds her that there was once something worth fighting for. But Raum knows well that she can give that force no quarter, for in its eyes she is scum, blighted and broken, and there is no coming back from that. |
