I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

"Don't do it," Belial said again, grasping the young mirror by the shoulder. "Don't take this thing out there, there's going to be a lightning storm." The mirror shook him off and eyed him uneasily. Belial's gaze darted up to the perfectly cloudless sky, and then back to the mirror. "I know what it looks like, but..." Then the mirror was past him, calling orders to the others as they prepared the dirigible. Belial snarled in frustration and wheeled to find the foreman.

Most dragons aren't tremendously happy to see Belial approach. It's not that he's a bad sort, he's fairly approachable and generally friendly, if not exactly the most talkative dragon. He does tend to dole out his own brand of hard-bitten cynicism but when you've been around as long as he has and seen as much of the world, you've got a fair bit of reasonable doubt to go around. No, he's usually unwelcome because he often shows up at some event or other proclaiming that it's going to go wrong somehow. He doesn't usually get an idea of exactly what will happen, more of a sense that something bad will be happening. Dragons who have been around when he makes his assertion that things will go wrong invariably see that he is right, which often leads to their discomfort in his presence.

Sensing this, Belial keeps mostly to himself, though he often visits Edelweiss on his island to keep his friend alive, so to speak. The two dragons share an unusual friendship. Belial is the most talkative with Edelweiss, telling him what he's been up to between visits as he senses his spirit friend is hungry for the forgotten adventure of living. He will often spend days on the island with Edelweiss before taking up for parts unknown once more.

The child of a tribe of hunters, Belial was happiest running through the Wandering Contagion, learning about the various plants and animals that called it home with a Plaguelander's native fearlessness. While he was an adequate hunter, he dismayed the clan by bringing many things home still alive and keeping them as pets for a time before releasing them. On the way home from a bust hunting trip, he felt a strange, immense wave of dread wash over him. It staggered him and left him leaning against a tree, trying to catch his breath. He wasn't sure where it had come from, but his heart pounded hard and he felt suddenly as if he were being hunted himself. He raced all the way home, running faster than he'd ever run in his life. Upon returning home, his father announced that they were going to journey to the Tangled Wood, and they had booked passage for the long trip aboard a ship bound for its coast.

Belial had never sailed before, and found the experience to be rather disenchanting. He was still little more than a hatchling, and the rocking boat and stale food were enough to keep his stomach ill. When he asked his father why they didn't just fly to the Tangled Wood, he got a laugh in response, but not a real answer. Mixed among the crew were passengers like Belial and his father, dragons that were bound for parts unknown to them. One such passenger was a distracted wildclaw not too much older than Belial himself. This dragon did not notice large-eyed Belial peeping around corners or peering at the scrawlings the dragon was making, so intent was he on his work. One day, Belial got up the nerve to ask the dragon his name. Edelweiss, sensing the youngster's eagerness, asked Belial if the younger dragon might help him map, earning Edelweiss a friend for life.

It was several days later when the storm struck, and struck hard. The ship shuddered and tossed to and fro as dragons raced the decks. Belial felt lost among the scramble of the others, knocked about by winds and rushing dragons alike. He was scooped up by a large ridgeback who was cursing and muttering about this being the reason he hated water, and carried far from the sinking ship. The ridgeback and several other of the ship's crew touched down on the mainland. Belial was immensely relieved to see his father among the dragons gathering. He was, however, distressed to see that his hero Edelweiss was not there. With the storm still raging, they were unable to remain on shore for long, and the remnants of the ships's passengers trudged inland to find shelter.

Belial was unable to return to the site of the wreck for many years. He had become swept up in a life of adventure of his own, ranging far and wide in an almost accidental fashion. He might have to deliver something to someone in a clan across the Shifting Expanse, and then he'd be sent back to his homeland of the Wandering Contagion, getting waylaid by a pack of mirrors. Adventure seemed to find him and once she did, she never let go.

Flying over the Fishspine Reef on one such occasion, the shipwreck came back to him in a flash of memory so vivid he felt rain sting his hide for a moment. He dipped closer, idly recalling that the reef held onto its wrecks. As he thought this, he fancied he could see the ship's snarling gale wolf figurehead nestled in the coral. Dipping down to see what it actually might be, he realized with a shock that it was the figurehead. Could more of the ship be down there? He dove, discovering bits and pieces of the vessel, the saltwater preserving lovingly preserving the treasures. He swam through the ship's skeleton, pausing when he came to the hold. A strand of netting flapped languidly in the breeze and he followed the strand, finding the remains of a wildclaw crumpled beneath several boxes, bones tangled in the threads of netting. Knowing in his heart what had happened, Belial kicked back up to the surface.

Needing a place to dry off before resuming his travels and feeling heavy with sadness, he settled on a small island and stretched out to dry in the small amount of sun granted to the tangled wood. He awoke with a wispy form hovering over him. Getting to his feet, he stared in awe at what appeared to be Edelweiss, though he looked rather insubstantial. Belial called him by his name, and the spectral dragon seemed to be nonplussed to be addressed as such. Belial delineated the details of the wreck and admitted haltingly to having found Edelweiss's final resting place. As he spoke, the spirit's form seemed to take on more body and shape and Belial recalled something he'd been told about spirits, that they needed their name and the living to keep them tied to earth. He promised Edelweiss he'd keep the connection before leaving the island.

As the years passed, Belial returned to Edelweiss's island frequently, finding more and more that the other dragon was the only one who could really understand him. As well, Edelweiss is the only one who does not seem to shrink from him or withhold anything from him, as most do when they see him coming. He seeks solace in his friend's company when he's not out roaming the earth and can often be found relaxing by the shore of a small island at the threshold of dusk.
