Starcatcher

squippy knew that the odd, thick-scaled egg in her nest was not hers. the nocturnes’ habit of nest parasitism wasn’t exactly a secret, after all... and, really, it’s not like she’s just going to toss out a defenseless dragonet still in its shell.
squippy did not lay her daughter’s egg, or expect in the slightest for her sweet starcatcher to come into the world as she did— thick scale-growths littering her body, clustered at the joints and on her tail and along the sensitive membranes of her wings.
removing the gem-bond took many years, during which starcatcher became apprenticed to her mother in witchcraft. the young nocturne took to magic like a duck to water.
finally, finally, there was relief from the many aches and pains her scale condition had caused her.
starcatcher does not know the dragons she was born to. all she knows is that her mother, and her father, and all the rest of her clan will be there for her, whenever she needs them.
