However, the responsibilities of a co-founder proved to be too weighty on Arata's free-spirit and he began to carry the title only in name; spending most of his time away from the clan and becoming a stranger to all but the eldest of members. With Cea's abrupt passing though, Arata found himself in the awkward position of suddenly becoming leader. A crushing sense of guilt has caused something new to arise in him- and so, vowing in earnest to serve as he should, he has worked hard to shed his former ways and grow into the type of leader his clan needs and deserved.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Welcome Home ━━

The string of flags that marked the entry path to Zephyr Temple hung from towering shoots, whipping sharply in the breeze. They looked even worse than the last time Arata saw them- having gone from a dull orange to a sun-faded yellow; with a handful even torn to shreds by the relentless winds. He’d have to bring that up to someone. It did them no good if travelers passing through struggled to find the clan.

His paws padded the familiar grounds slowly, and soon enough, a bamboo archway came into view; a well-trodden dirt path behind it. Standing at attention off to one side was a lithe Pearlcatcher of striking colors, sporting a wide straw hat despite the overcast sky. Just at a glance, they seemed to be far friendlier than the usual guard he encountered.

“Welcome to the Zephyr Temple.” they greeted cheerily. “What business have you with the clan?”

“I’m here to see Cea.”

Something seemed to pass through the dragon’s eyes, as he peered at the Tundra closely upon the mention of the Matriarch’s name.

“For what reason in particular? I’m afraid I wasn’t notified of any guests coming to see her. If you give me a moment, I’ll have to summon our captain.”

With fluidity and speed comparable to a Spiral, he raised his tail to tug one of the bells hanging high above from the arch, emitting a sharp, but pleasant chime. Arata supposed he should have been used to the routine- but flying for a day straight had drained him and couldn't stop himself from shutting his eyes, exhaling deeply as he did so. Opening his maw again, he prepared to elaborate- but the faint scraping of sharpened claws and clinking keys interrupted his reply. Shroud in a mantle of leaves, a Wildclaw emerged from the edge of the trail ahead, and piercing eyes of jade very much like his own scanned him quickly.

Ah. So she was still a member.

“Let him in, Irvell. He needs no approval. This is Arata.”

“O-oh!”

As he glanced back, Arata caught a glimpse Irvell's widened eyes within the shade of his hat. Hurridly shuffling off to the side, the drake dipped his head low and swept his tail inward.

“Please forgive me, sir. I hadn’t reali-“

“It’s fine.” Arata rumbled before the guard could carry on, inwardly wincing at the cutting tone of his own reply. Stretching a wing lazily, he offered an appreciative smile to Irvell. “Nothing to apologize over when it comes to safety.”

“Thank you, Bodhmall.” he added, briefly meeting the captain’s dry gaze.

She remained silent, only nodding lightly in response as the Tundra passed under the archway; with a final, polite word of thanks muttered to them both once more. Striding onward, he caught Irvell’s voice again, lowered to a hushed tone that almost melted into the wind as it ruffled his fur.

“Who…is Arata again? I know you and Damentus have brought him up before..but I…um…forgot. I’m sorry.”

Arata had not interacted with the captain much, but Bodhmall never struck him as one of tact. So, it was of no surprise to him that the response that followed made no effort to hide behind a polite whisper.

“He’s Cea’s mate and our other leader. If you could call him that.”

“..Oh.”

NOTES & FUN STUFF

• Arata had never sought to form a clan- that was the idea of his mate. But when Cea is killed whilst helping the clan ward off raiders, Arata finds himself in the awkward position of taking over- as he is technically still the clan’s co-founder.

• Given his track record, a good portion of the clan feels he isn’t fit to lead. He accepts criticism that he's been negligent in his duties- and there was once a time when he would have willing stepped down upon request. But a crushing sense of guilt has caused something new ti arise out of him- and so, he refuses to simply relinquish the role- vowing in earnest to serve as he should. Nonetheless, two-thirds of the clan depart; primarily leaving newer members of the clan behind.

• The clan has lost both skill sets, income, and strength with so many dragons having left, living in the crumbling, remote temple becomes a burden. Furthermore, be located at the resting site of his former mate is emotionally draining. Believing it will be good for both Arata and the clan, Papillio suggests they return the clan the the Zephyer Steeps for the time being.

• In the Mistral Jamboree following his transition to the clan’s founder, Arata stumbles into a fortune stall while seeking out a clan member. Though wary, he is coaxed into staying for a reading and is foretold of a future for the clan that lies not in Windswept Plateau…but Dragonhome- and the clan is to be there by summer’s arrival.
