________
Ambush

It was a dark, cold night. Every night was cold in that place, but that night was especially dark. A good night for hunting.

I was wandering around, walking quietly and swiftly through the snow, as I learned how to do. In the distance, I saw a faint, blue glow. That was a good sign, it was going to be a good night.

"Good evening, dear traveler...", I said.

The banescale woke up abruptly, scared for his life. His head and paws glowed in a beautiful blue fire, much stronger than when he was sleeping. He was perfect.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I don't mean to bother you, really... Please don't hurt me."

I was wearing a dark cape that covered most of me, but as I got closer, the banescale could see the scars in my body and the terrified look I had in my face. His expression turned softer. It worked every time.

"I... Uh... Do you need any help?", he said. I got him.

"Yes, please. I'm completely lost in the middle of this snow, can you please help an old traveler around these parts?"

"Well, to be honest, I'm not quite sure where I am either. I was flying for a long time and landed here to see if I could find some food and shelter. I managed to find some fish, do you want some?"

"That would be great, thank you so much!", I said, grabbing a roasted fish. "Are you traveling alone?"

"Yes, I've been traveling for a while and decided to go back home to my family. I took a shortcut through here, but I don't recognize this place so I guess I'm lost too. I assumed I would be around Asthery City by now."

"Actually, you're in Asthery already. Or what was left of it."

"Excuse me? Wha... How? Where's the city? I mean... And who are you?"

"Well, I'm the very first inhabitant of Asthery. I watched as everything was destroyed a few years ago. A strong blizzard that lasted for a whole year covered the city, the mountains, the forests and the sea. Everyone who didn't escape, died. It has been a cold and lonely place since then, but at least the storm is gone."

"That's impossible... How did you survive?"

He was making the wrong questions. That was good, he was completely distracted.

"You see, you're in the area formerly known as the Kodomo Woods. Maybe you've heard of it? Anyway, there was a prison in a cave in these woods, it was controlled by the Vérkert Guild, a criminous group. I was locked in that prison when everything happened, and the cave was protected from the cold, so I survived, barely."

"I, uh... I have so many questions.", he laughed.

I should have smiled, in response for his laugh. I had to smile. But I don't know how to do it anymore. His expression changed when he looked at my serious face. I had to act fast...

Transporting the young banescale to that cell wasn't easy. I knew I was getting weaker, but things would get easier now, because I finally managed to do it. I imprisoned a couple of banescales, and their fire ancient magic would surely help me now.

He woke up hours later. I was already worried I had hurt him too much. "Wha... Where... am I?"

"The Kodomo Prison", I said. I could feel the cold cruelty in my voice. It bothered me, but I had to act like that.

"You... What are you doing? What the..."

"Anger won't help you here. You can yell and swear all you want, it doesn't bother me."

I left him there with his new partner. I don't need to explain the system to them anymore, they will tell each other. Either I collect their ancient magic through their eggs, or they die a painful, slow death. I was sure he would make the right choice, he was young and innocent.

I went outside the cave and looked at the sky. My eyes were wet. But as I looked at the distance, I saw a small, green, faint glow: a firefly.

"You will live again, Shinmyra. I promise, I won't give up."
