FRET

"What's that, Pops? I'm being a bit tricksey? Well, ain't that just who I am! Ha!”

"So, what do you guys do for a living?" Fret asked, yawning, as he twisted past a fat clump of bamboo. His massive bundle of scroll cases jangled furiously against each other amongst a large lump of knots. The fae, whose name was Poppy, blinked at him somewhat blankly with huge pink eyes. The tundra - Ody? Ossy? - looked as if he was about to answer, but closed his mouth instead. Fret wanted to laugh - these guys were real funny.

He had been traversing his regular ol' delivery route alongside his trusty assistant, Swat the Slink, excited for payday, when he came across this unlikely duo standing awkwardly at the edge of Millmeadows. Now, Fret didn't get paid enough to stick to his routes, so out of pure curiosity he dove down check out why a tiny little fae was travelling with huge, lumbering tundra. They have been vague about their intentions so far, but Fret didn't have time to care. When they asked for a tour of the Windswept Plateau, he let them come along with him for deliveries - he went everywhere, after all. And it was nice to have a bit of a chat, even if neither of them were very talkative.

They were on their way through the Zephyr Steppes now, and somehow, the two lost travelers were still keeping up with Fret's quick pace, which was one of the things he prided himself on, as a messenger. He thinks it's because of some kinda fae-arcane-star magic, whatever the heck they did at Starfall. Finally, the fae spoke. "We are wanderers. Currency lacks meaning within this lifestyle." Fret snorted. This was definitely some miffy arcane trickery.

Born to two party-loving dragons up in the bustling, creative community of Cloudsong, Fret was always mixed in with the fun. Ever since he was a hatchling, he was curious about nearly everything, and living in a crafty, artisan area meant that there was always something to be curious about. Fret learned how to read, write, paint, draw, and craft at an early age. Because his parents lacked self-control and were constantly in financial troubles, Fret would often go out to the senior craftsmen and offer his assistance for treasure. Just like his parents, it became habitual for him to worry often about how many coins he had in his pockets.

Eventually, as Fret grew older, he fell away from his parents' tiring lifestyle and began staying with his employer, a popular painter across the Windswept Plateau. His main job, and the one that was particularly good at, was to delivering messages and paintings to his employer's clients. Fret prided himself on his speed and solid memorization of the best routes. His pay remained the same for many years, despite it being just enough for food and a bit of entertainment on the weekends, as his boss was kind enough to share his roof which made Fret feel guilty to ask for more.

Fret adopted Swat the Breezeback Slink off of the streets (or rather, market areas) of Cloudsong. It was originally because the seller had told him about Breezebacks' ability to create updrafts for fast travel, but Fret quickly became attached to Swat, and the two became inseparable. He didn't even care that he had to take a cut from his pay to feed the little guy - the company more than made up for it. Despite being a social butterfly all his life, he had never feel a true connection to most of the dazed, dreamy artists that he had lived with since he was born.

When Fret first met Poppy (Pops, as he calls her) and Odys, he looked down on them. They had no goals, no income, and no home! How were they even still living? However, the more the group explored the Plateau together, he became to see the world through their eyes and understand their similarities. Sornieth was filled with cultures, dragons, and magic that one who stayed in their homeland all their life would never be able to experience. Their stories about the Starfall Isles and the Southern Icefield were enough to convince him that there were things out there that could help him discover more about himself. And so, with that, Fret packed up all his savings and explained to his employer that he'd be back after a long journey to find his own purpose.
