basic lore idea:
the darker parts could be a developing illness he obtained from traveling to new places. he came into contact with something that seemed friendly and (because he is a cinnamon roll) was nice to it. Instead it was a backstabbing witch who gave him a poison treat that took hold of his heart. so now he suffers from literal heartache so he eventually found a garden that seemed to ease the pain. Of course it was still there, but it was more manageable. That garden was actually the garden of curses, where most dragons go when they are hurt or suffering from curses. something about the garden lifts their spirits and some even get better! those that do get better go back to travelling, but he finds that he would rather stay, and protect the others. Because deep down he fears it may hit him again.
