Gaoler. Jailer. There is a reason they are homophones. This has always been apparent to Bluebell, the hatchling that never did live up to his hatch-given name. He is told that they mean unconditional love, that they are soft. Gentle. Bluebells, that is. But he knows better. His heritage is that of his breed, and that is not something that has ever bothered him. He is cold. Unyielding. Stony, some have said. Stoic.
And then he met them.
He was assigned a mate as all Keepers are. The jailers served their Icewarden, and eventually, a suitable match was found for them within their own ranks. That is simply how it was. It just... made sense, as all things in their lives do. But they… they had never made sense. Or, not in a way that can be done justice with mere words. Steelclaw. Another dragon who had never quite lived up to their hatch-name. They are soft in a way Bluebell never was, and still stronger for it. They are a perpetual clash of ideals: they are happy even in times of great sorrow, so as to instill others with their sunshine, and yet perpetually unhappy with their lives as Gaolers. Jailers. Prodigal sons and daughters and children of their great Icewarden.
They wish not to jail. They want to be free, and they whisper this to Bluebell, and it is the first time that he realizes that they are just as trapped as the Horrorbeasts they kept here. So they hatched a scheme instead of a nest as they ought, and one night, they made their escape, carved out a lair of their own.
It is in Bluebell’s nature to guard. Now he guards something worth keeping: the mate he fell in love with, their newfound family of ragtag dragons seeking refuge, and their freedom.
