Biography

Spirit of Nature
Leather Aviator Satchel
Actual Clan Leader
Charismatic - Decisive - Dependable

Relius's family had been merchants for generations, and just like many young dragons, she had grown up learning her family's trade. She did not have quite the shrewd business sense required of a merchant, but she was charismatic, decisive, and great at leading others. She frequently helped her family's business by traveling with caravans of goods and supplies, meeting with clients and ensuring that deals were completed as promised.

Relius was on her way to see her mother, Tenjin, a well-known and successful merchant who could always be relied on to know what goods would be needed, and where. She was also the head of the family business.

Relius had just recently returned from another journey, and she was growing tired of traveling, completing a deal, and returning, only to set out again and do it all over. Yes, she was in charge of those journeys and had some leeway to alter the deals that were made of necessary, but she was really only going where she was told to go and completing deals that were made by others. She wanted something more. She could not negotiate quite as well as her mother or siblings, but surely there was something else she could do to help the business. Something more fulfilling.

She was also becoming tired of traveling constantly. It was exhausting to spend every night in camps or inns, never knowing exactly where you would be sleeping next. It would be nice to be able to sleep in the same bed, with the same pillows and the same blankets, in the same place, for a while.

The young Pearlcatcher paused outside her mother's door, and then entered.

Tenjin looked up from her desk, littered with papers, charts, and various notebooks. "I knew you'd be coming to see me soon," she stated with a sly smile.

"You always say that," Relius retorted jovially. Though Relius could never be sure if her mother was serious when she said things like this, she noticed the warming kettle and and small tea mugs on the side table. One had been used. "Did your morning tea tell you why I'm coming to see you?"

"Of course it did!" Tenjin replied as she came around the desk and embraced Relius in a hug. "But as your mother, I'd like to hear it from you."

The two Pearlcatchers settled into the two chairs in front of the desk usually reserved for clients, and Tenjin listened as Relius told her how she had been feeling. As she finished, the kettle whistled and Tenjin got up to make them both a cup of tea. She handed Relius’s to her and sat back down, and for a while they sipped in silence.

“Were you thinking of leaving the business?”

Tenjin’s question took Relius by surprise. The thought of leaving the family business had never crossed her mind. She considered it for a moment before replying. “I don’t know, I don’t know what I would do if I left. This is all I’ve known-” She stopped mid sentence, noticing Tenjin staring into her tea cup, and turning it slowly in her hand. “Mom!” She said sternly. She had spoken to her mother about this before. Her divining was fine for the business, fine if that was what others were seeing her for, but Relius was here for her mother’s advice. Not a reading.

Tenjin stopped, placing her cup back on the desk. She seemed lost in thought for a moment before she turned back to Relius. “I have one more assignment for you. When you come back, whatever it is that you want, I’ll make it happen.”

“Mom, I don’t want another assignment.” Relius replied, annoyed now. That was the reason she was there, what she had been saying the whole time.

I know, I’m sorry,” Tenjin replied apologetically. “I do understand how you’ve been feeling. Like you need a purpose. When I think about this business as just selling and transporting goods to turn a profit, I start to feel the same way about it. I am criticized all the time for my investments in other businesses, but I see helping others achieve their dreams as a sort of purpose in my life, and I can only do that so long as my own business is profitable. That’s what keeps me going here.” She paused for a moment. “I want you to find your purpose, but I need your help on this one. I don’t trust anyone else.”

Relius looked her mother in the eyes and considered what she had said. Tenjin had never spoken of her feelings about the family business in that manner before, and she had been known to put on a good act when she needed others to believe something. Relius nearly always knew when she was acting, however, and she did not seem to be at this moment. She seemed sincere.

“Alright,” Relius sighed. “Where am I going this time?”

“Bronze Willow,” Relius muttered to herself, looking over her map again.

From CatkinStarchild: She's from a grand merchantile family with long roots in Oakheart, and her father's family are druids and royalty of other clans.

Notes for lore:

Relius will have her own clan called Bronze Willow who live in a village by the same name in the Shrieking Wilds.

Relies leaves Oakheart with the goal of starting out on her own. She finds a clan called Bronze Willow and the next heir of the leadership position, Ervor, falls for her. It becomes his turn to lead, but he is not ready and he can't really make more difficult decisions easily. Relius's regal bloodline and natural leadership abilities make her a prime candidate for the job, so they agree that they will share leadership responsibilities. This is not unheard of the mate of the leader to share responsibilities of that role. However, in reality, Relius leads and Ervor merely enforces her decisions. Everyone turns a blind eye.
