How strange, he thinks as the dragons before him tremble and beg. How strange that they fear him when he is merely doing his job.

They have fascinating notions of life and death. One is beautiful shades of green, the other a sickly red. One brings happiness, the other brings dispair.

Strange. Foolish.

If asked, he could regale the living with tales of suffering and pain. How many dragons lay in agony, begging for the end? When he goes to them, they settle, realizing that everything would soon be over. The sick, the elderly, the unfortunate victims of disease and disaster, he greets them all with the idea of peace.

The good ones do not fear him.

The bad ones desperately claw at him, hoping they could keep him away for a little longer, just long enough to right their wrongs. As if their claws could touch him. As if it would make any difference. He takes them all, unmoved by their past.

One by one, every dragon falls into his domain, and he leads them to the other side.

It is not a long walk, but he hopes his company brings some small comfort to the departing souls.

And so, they walk together.
