These were the only words that the young tundra remembered. They rang over and over in his head like an anthem as he wailed. A curse- an understanding that somehow he himself had been born wrong. The voice sold him for a single gold- not worth their time to even bother feeding him, just get him away so his obnoxious cries would no longer bother them.
Into the hands of hatchling traffickers. A band of underworld dragons who bought and sold dragons like others did materials or trinkets. Into a pen with the other young dragons they had managed to lure from nests or gather wandering too far from their parents. He could see other, bigger pens too- adult dragons, rough and tough and ready to fight for whatever deity was willing to pay the most to have them in their army.
Nothing good could await the young tundra who had been sold for a single gold coin. A day he sniffled in the pen, curled in a ball on a small pile of hay. A single day, just like the single gold. A deep blue dragon came by, dropping off a few crates along with some adult dragons who were added to the military stock. They spoke with one of the workers, smiled. Someone they knew and were on good terms with.
The blue lady stayed a while. The young tundra watched warily from his spot in the very back of the pen as the pair laughed. They glanced at him. They spoke some more, laughed again, glanced again. A single gold coin was exchanged. The blue lady approached, opening the pen and entering, picking up the hatchling. He did not resist, cowering and staying still.
They left. Stories would be told for years after of the tundra who had been bought for a single gold coin. Sometimes all it takes to overcome the snap of misfortune is a bit of humor, a good story, and a single piece of luck.
