yBe8nan.png THE LOREKEEPERS
tumblr_inline_o21bmtn7Oz1r3lvtf_400.png
For the longest time, The Lorekeepers were not respected within The Abandoned as a tribe or clan. Instead, their dwindling numbers and their focus on prose, legends, and history had them marked as a “club” by the cults and warbands that comprised the majority of the coalition. However, their knowledge of history and Sornieth history proved helpful in keeping them all in one piece, granting them a rather lofty status among the clans. They’re liked well enough by even the shiftiest of clans and delight in talking to even the most grotesque of its members. Some dragons theorize--if not for their charisma--some of the Abandoned wouldn’t know anything about one another at all.

ABSINTHE
"Go with the Glade, sister. Our holy mistress protects you."

Considering where she was raised, it’s really no surprise that Absinthe grew up to be religious. Her family’s den was located in one of the hollows around The Behemoth at the heart of the Viridian Labyrinth, she has memories of having seen the Gladekeeper up close, and her clan and kin were very festive, devoted followers of their goddess who dedicated nearly everything they did to her honor. She attended every festival, she helped tend the local shrines, and she studied hard in the Verdant Way, a monk-like pact created by a small, pacifist collection of dragons in the Shrieking Wilds.

For all intents and purposes, she was an unadventurous and godly dragon who followed every rule, greeted every day with a smile, and kept to herself as she practiced her alchemy and healing. The most risky thing she ever did was wander into the woods to collect flowers, which she kept pressed in a journal of affirmations and devotions. Even then, the worst that ever befell her was the occasionally splinter or fussy bird.

So, it came as a shock when she began to carefully pack her meager belongings into a satchel and cheerfully informed her kin and clan that she was setting off on a journey. Her purpose was to be a missionary of sorts, preaching the word of the Gladekeeper to the lands outside her lush home. The first stop on her journey would be the Scarred Wasteland, she announced, as her family scrambled to change her mind. It was as though they were speaking to a wall, however, and with a smile and a wave, she soared southwest to seek out any Plague dragons who would be willing to harbor her.

Her family assumed they’d never hear from her again.

THE LOREKEEPERS AND THE ABANDONED
Absinthe arrived to the Scarred Wasteland and was, unsurprisingly, viewed with skepticism and disdain by most of the dragons she encountered. Through her faith and optimism, she did eventually manage to squeeze her way in with a clan who was nothing short of impressed with her determination, though they found her religious spiels tiresome. While bothered by the fact that they blatantly ignored her, the friends and insight she received into this foreign culture opened her eyes to the fact that--despite their differences--the eleven Flights of Sornieth were not so different after all. It was jarring, especially having lived so much of her life dedicated to one goddess and one way of life, to realize that the “others” she’d long heard about were just as intelligent, kindly, and capable as the dragons she’d left back home.

Though still quite dedicated to the Gladekeeper, she eventually decided that it was not her place to shove her beliefs down the throats of those who had once been outsiders. She began to think that maybe the disagreements between the gods should not filter down to their faithful, and that propagating the idea of one gods’ superiority would only bring harm to the mortal dragons of Sornieth. These sentiments, confessed to her new Plague clanmates during a night of drinking fig wine, seemed to reverberate through the crowd and eventually elicited a response from a tiny, red-eyed Fae.

The Fae said she sounded a lot like a Mirror a friend of a friend had met once upon a time, out in the sandwastes of the Abiding Boneyard. The Mirror, who she thought was named “Tremor,” apparently led an inter-Flight clan out in the desert and preached much the same thing. The last she’d heard, she confessed, was that he’d packed up and moved to Dragonhome for religious reasons. Something about the Pillar of the World. It was representative of a time when Flights worked together, or some such nonsense.

Moved, Absinthe decided that maybe a new home would be in her future. She bid her new friends good-bye, gathered her journals and keepsakes, and took to the skies yet again. This time, she traveled north, to Dragonhome, the Followers of the Pillar, and The Abandoned as a whole.

THE FLAUROS INCIDENT

Life in Dragonhome was not what she expected, and life in The Abandoned was a far cry from what made her comfortable. It was dry and hot and barren, even more so than the Scarred Wasteland, and while The Abandoned was comprised of allied clans, most of them didn’t get along and the alliances were tentative. At least the Followers of the Pillar, led by the Mirror the Fae had mentioned, were like-minded and kind. They took her in and helped her thrive despite her discomfort, and proved to her that even the worst of enemies could grow to be the best of friends.

Things were wonderful, peaceful, and productive, until one day Tremor was called away on an emergency meeting by the leaders of the other clans in the confederation. He was gone for days and, when he returned, spoke grimly of the fate of their home. Dragons on the opposite end of the canyon had been killed, abducted, and driven mad, and a shadowy figure known as Flauros was the one responsible for it all.

In time, things began to fall apart. The Followers splintered as Tremor, terrified, entered pacts with more war-like tribes and clans to create a collection of skirmishers to join in the offensive efforts. Snap, a powerful Guardian who became the warmaster of The Abandoned in its entirety, began annexing her neighbors and organizing their members into a military. Absinthe struggled to stay neutral but was dragged away by Snap herself to assist with the medical needs of the sick, hexed, and injured. Resist as she might, when she saw the droves of ailing and dying dragons clustered in the sick houses of Snap’s war camp, she could not deny that she was needed.

As uncomfortable as she was, she went along with it. Crafting brews she’d learned in the Labyrinth and setting bones like she’d learned in the Wasteland, she exhausted herself laboring over the wounded. Even when the battles were over and Flauros was defeated, she had no time to celebrate as victory didn’t magically return function to broken wings or cure curses that whittled away their hosts. She never saw the Emperor fall, or knew Hashakgik was to blame until weeks after the war ended. She barely even noticed the forced celebrations that weren’t very celebratory at all.
Even now, years later, Absinthe still tends to her old patients. While she has taken up with The Lorekeepers due to their broader, more welcoming mindset, she still acts less like a writer or storyteller than a medic. She follows up with survivors who now have chronic ails, and tends to the needs of those whose bits and pieces don’t work like they used to, hoping to eventually fix their limp and help them stop flying lopsided. It’s a testament to her dedication and care, and The Abandoned as a whole are grateful that she deigns to stay and help.

PERSONALITY
Absinthe is a soft-spoken dragon with a gentle touch and a gentler manner, almost completely incapable of uttering a bad word about anyone. No matter how brash, crude, or vicious somebody is, she can always find a way to rationalize why they would act the way that they do. This extends even to the traitors of The Flauros Incident; while she does not condone their actions and hates the idea of war, she grieves for their loss and the situations they must have lived through to inspire them to drop to such lows. She leaves flowers at Hashakgik’s “grave” at the entrance to Irthskaar, and prays for him to find forgiveness and peace wherever he may end up.

Though she is admittedly quite gullible and trusting, she is extremely intelligent in matters of history, natural science, and herb lore. Her day job is that of an apothecary and healer, and the potions she creates and the magic she weaves are of a quality that no other nearby dragon can match. The drawback is that both are quite dependent on her heritage and ingredients from her homeland, which are very difficult to come by in Dragonhome, and take a great deal of preparation and time. It’s for this reason that Haven, a rival potionmaster, gets far more business: he can create in bulk, whereas she only makes a few large batches a year.

As a hobby, Absinthe enjoys crafting incense with her fellow “soft” dragons, and has a small group of close friends from various allied clans that join her for these sessions. They try to meet once a week if possible, and include Absinthe, Ramses, Nibani, Esther, and Kisa. Others drift in and out based on interest and their available free time, so Absinthe always makes sure to have a few extra tea satchels and treats set aside for unexpected visitors, just in case.
