Biography

List of Past lairs is at the bottom! Add yours and the date he arrived.

If ever you feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it (and so would his original owner) if you could just return his home at Setyrlite Alliance Calib's Nest instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

Uh-oh, looks like this contemplative mirror wandered a little too far from his lair (#56408/jabby), and he went off to see the world! Well, actually, that is a lie--he was actually searching for two things; 1) a purpose in life and 2) his children.

Balthazar was among the more sensitive members of the clan. He fell in love with one of the guardians, Acacia, and they hatched two young hatchlings. However, these young rebels were inclined to explore the world, and among many responsibilities and clan duties, they managed to slip away from him and the other members of the Setyrlite Alliance. Heartbroken, he abandoned his duty at the lair so he could search for his children, though he inwardly knows that they were likely swooped up by another clan who could provide better care than he ever could.

After much hunting he found out his children no longer were among his people, or even regular dragonkind at all. They had been exalted to the Icewardnen to help keep the deep, cold dens of The Southern Icefield warm. They seemed to not remember him or their former life at all. Rather than bring them confusion and heartache at a life they nolonger were meant for, he left them alone and retreated to the darkness.

Down in the thick mat of briars known as the "Tangled Wood" he found a little fae name Ascension. She seemed confused to see a light dragon in Shadow territory, though pleased to meet him. In time the two grew close and fell in love. Although rich in game and nesting places, Ascension wanted to move away from her old home and parents, so Balthazar and his new love struck out together, hoping to start a new life in a new nest.

He followed Ascension to a lair of Shadows and was thrilled when they stayed to hatch a nest. The brood made him proud, but he could already see his love was wanting to move on. Two of the hatchlings ventured off on their own, but little Serania smiled as she told him of her plans to stay. He smiled back at her, his heart lighter for knowing one of his little ones had a sure place to stay. With that he was ready to fly off once more with Ascension.

An ache of homesickness nestled within Balthazar's chest. He didn't feel comfortable returning home, not quite yet. The memories still ached like an old bruise, tender to the touch. But his missed the warmth of the Waste and found a temporary home with a small clan. Or, at least, he thoughtit small at first. He soon discovered that he was visiting a lair split by turmoil. Closer to the center of the lair were a tireless group of dragons, firmly dedicated to their crafts and duties with very little time to spend contemplating life on the outside. But on the borders were the outskirters, the ones with deep allegiances to the clan but no desire to be swept up in its politics. He and Ascension were greeted warmly by these outsiders. They spent many nights roaming with them, talking and listening, laughing and dancing and flying. Ascension soon found herself ripe with the promise of hatchlings, and shortly thereafter they welcomed four little embers into the world. Balthazar saw his first clutch in their bright and burning eyes, and for a while he deeply considered staying. But something strange was bothering Ascension, something nagging incessantly at her. He couldn't place it, and she told him nothing, but an odd Tundra of the inner clan told Balthazar, in no uncertain terms, that he and his mate were in danger. Of course he didn't want to leave. Why would he want to leave? But there was something clouding the bright eyes of his girl, and she meant more to him than the world. A tall, silent Wildclaw had taken a quiet liking to the Ascension and her children. She assured her she would do her best by them, raise them as her own until they were old enough to lead their lives how they chose. And so, with a leaden heart, Balthazar gathered his mate and left.

He journeyed with her through the Cloudsong, stopping briefly for the night with a large wind clan who gave them rest but didn't say much. Early the next morning they trekked down to the Reedcleft Ascent where they met another wind clan, much smaller than the last and with more room and food to spare.
Balthazar watched as the local fae swarmed around Ascension, showering her with questions and eager welcomes. He was still worried for her, but perhaps the fluffy, carefree happiness of these wind dragons was as infectious as it appeared at a glance.

After being welcomed to this small but crowded-with-hatchlings-lair of Disconcerto, Balthazar was immediately tackled by eight hatchlings who begged to hear of his travels. He told all the stories of the different places he'd went to and showed off his scars from skirmishes with dangerous beasts. As he did so, he felt nostalgic, thinking of how, if he had this much experience back then, he could have had this bonding time with his first children. He therefore decided that he should stick around awhile, perhaps training these little ones in the way of the warrior.
Eventually, Balthazar became sick of the clan. He'd seen it grow, yes, seen the young dragons who looked up eagerly at him when he taught them how to kill their first monster, yes, but he'd also seen tragedy, as the cold winds of the south could easily take a newborn's life. Ascension was impatient now, too. She'd faced hardship when the only dragon that she'd befriended had been killed for the sakes by minions of the Plaguebringer, and Balthazar noticed her agitated mood as the clan greeted her each day. After a short discussion with his mate, they decided that it was time to move on.

Balthazar liked the Wandering Contagion so visiting shanncrafter felt natural. He was a mirror dragon and though he was born in the Emberglow Hearth, all mirrors knew the Plaguebringer's domain well. he didn't mind the dragons in this clan either. the other mirrors in the lair were rather plain, as compared to the bright and colourful skydancers and imperials, but they were good company. he soon found companions in Altair and Clymene. The clan was relatively young, and he knew that the clan leader, an unfriendly mirror female, did not like them. her mate was more friendly, however, and Balthazar noticed that Ascension looked as if she was heavy with another brood. this would have to be their home, at least for a while. their stay was pleasant and rather uneventful. the mirrors were the main hunters of the clan, while the skydancers and imperials and spirals were the fishers and gatherers. The guardians stayed to defend the lair from any potential threat, and the remaining dragons either took care of the hatchlings or made themselves useful. Balthazar usually joined the other mirrors but he took to the coliseum occasionally to improve his skills. However, after a few weeks had passed, the pair grew bored of their home and decided to leave. with parting gifts and tearful farewells, Balthazar and Ascension took off, ready to find a new lair elsewhere.

After countless days of travel, they rested in a small wind clan. They settled in well. Balthazar took up hunting and protecting the clan against dangers, and Ascension explored and mapped the land around the clan. The land was untamed, wild, with many dangers around the corner for such a small clan. But everyone was happy, and had their own place. Even the older hatchlings had a job, to sort throught the hoard and protect the younger ones. Ascension became good friends with the librarian, a wildclaw named Knowings, and Balthazar himself enjoyed the company of Nox, a grumpy Mirror who trained young warriors.

They were here for quite a long time, and Ascension laid a nest of eggs. Ascension wasn't alone in the nesting, however, and soon the lair space filled with too many young mouths to feed. Baltazar hunted hard using all the wisdom given to him by the young guardian, but bellies still went empty. Someone had to leave... so he and Ascension volunteered.

At first they tried to return to the but found, much to their dismay, an empty lair full of memories. The dragons were gone! With nowhere else to go, they wandered back into the shadows only to find familiar faces among the brambles at Calib's clan. Although things were bigger and more busy than he remembered, it felt nice to rest in the cool and damp. None the less, he had found a purpose: find a clan and protect it! Calib's clan was already protected by old, wise (and slightly insane) dragons. It was time to find a new clan to protect and guide.
