Custos The Protector

Deciding to leave Asteria to her rest, you continue down the hall and pass a tarnished metal door. Vines are woven through the gears, and it seems to be propped open rather than functioning as it should be. You go to push it open, but a dark green and heavily armored pearlcatcher suddenly blocks your path. He wears thick green armor and a stunning kelpie mane, but perched atop his head is an oddly out of place flower crown. "Greetings, I am Custos, Socius's protector. was there something you needed from one of us?" |

Origins
| From the very beginning, Custos was a survivor and a protector. Despite his deep, murky green hide, Custos was born in the Southern Icefields. There, he learned valuable lessons in survival, as his clan was not the most prosperous around. He matured quickly, leaving his birth clan to join a military serving the Icewarden. Custos did not expect to find many friends there, but he was surprised by a perky young guardian named Amara. She quickly befriended him, and Custos found himself as her unwitting charge. Amara and Custos were practically inseparable, working together seamlessly on missions near and far from their base. It was heaven for Custos; he had a friend and a guardian to help him develop his skills in battle, and he soon rose high in the ranks. Still, he tried his best to work with Amara often, enjoying her company despite seeing less and less of her. Until she was gone. The guardian he had loved had left on a routine solo mission--she had been taking more of those recently--and simply never came back. Custos searched for her corpse, found none, and concluded there could be only one cause for her vanishing: him. To him, it was clear his selfish status had pushed Amara away, and this mindset slowly tinted his pearl black. It was with a guilt wreaked mind that he flew from the Icefields, his purpose unknown even to him. He found himself in the shifting expanse--a welcome and drastic change to the Icefields--and then on the Galestorm Flyers' doorstep. Tired, he contented himself to a few nights there, but upon meeting the lively spiral Socius, that changed. The soft-hearted herbalist took to Custos like glue, and Custos found his walls crumbling to dust. When he discovered Socius had a to get injured in accidents and fights, he broke and took up the role Amara had filled for so long: a protector. For the first time in several moons, Custos' pearl shone silver, not black. |

Personality
Custos is known in the clan as a startlingly gentle yet stone-faced dragon. To most, he hides his emotions behind an impassive face and gentle voice. Few get to see his true thoughts and fewer still find him a "friend".
Author's Note: I feel it is prudent to note here, Custos did not directly state the following but it was implied; he purposefully avoids finding new friends, as the hurt he felt--and feels--from Amara's abandonment threatened to destroy him.

There is perhaps one dragon he considers a true friend, and that is Socius. The lively spiral wormed her way into his heart, and she basks in the benefits. Custos has shown his kind and caring side to her, beyond the politeness he offers his clanmates. He will often spend his hours musing on facts of life with Socius, usually as shetangles braids his hair and crafts flower crowns for him. In return for her company, Custos protects her from the physical danger she finders herself in when hunting for new herbs. He additionally finds himself as a social buffer and translator for her, ensuring she can avoid over stimulation whenever possible. The two are so close, many mistake them for mates, but both remain single by choice. Custos--since his painful departure from Amara--has sworn off romance, instead filling his time with various hobbies, including training, assisting Socius in whatever scheme she is attempting, and dabbling in pottery. The latter is the most difficult for him at the moment, and he has yet to show a completed piece to anyone.
