Mishka was born alone, in an empty nest, abandoned. She knew nothing of love, nothing of kindness... She knew nothing of anything, really. For days she laid there in her lonely, rotting nest, slowly starving to death. After observing the small wildlife creatures eat the plant life of the forest, she began to do so as well, desperate for sustenance, desperate for the aching to stop. She was only a small child, not even alive for one moon cycle yet. She didn't understand why her stomach still ached, even after eating all that she could fit. And of course, how could she? There was nobody else around to tell her that her kind cannot survive off of plants.

She had already been hallucinating for days when she began seeing it. It was a strange creature, bigger than anything else she'd ever seen before. The creature seemed to flicker, like it was only half part of this world. And yet, despite everything she had learned so far telling her she should be, she wasn't afraid. It radiated like the light from the sun. Its presence felt warm and comforting, and Mishka felt at home when she was near it. This odd creature and the feeling it gave her fascinated Mishka, and she got the feeling it wanted her to follow it. And so she did.

The mysterious spirit led Mishka deep into the forest, deeper than she even knew it went. It was beginning to get dark, and she was getting extremely exhausted and scared, and started to wonder where she was being taken. Just as she was beginning to consider turning back, the creature stopped. She looked up, and then she saw it. A huge tree, one could call it a behemoth. Mishka couldn't even see how far the branches reached outward, let alone the top. It cut through the clouds, and seemed to reach up into the heavens. As she was admiring its beauty and immense size, she heard a voice in her head.
"You were brought here because you are in dire need of help, my child. Your parents abandoned you, though that was no fault of their own. They were forced out by something sinister, something pure evil. You were lucky enough to be unharmed, though next time you may not be so lucky. I will give you all the guidance you will need to train and become strong enough to fight against the evil of this world, but I cannot do more than that. After I have taught you what I can, you must go on alone."

And so, the Gladekeeper, as she eventually revealed herself to be, kept true to her word. First she taught Mishka that to grow stronger she must eat seafood, she showed her where and how to hunt it, and she taught her the basics of combat. Eventually, it became time for Mishka to leave the side of the great Deity and continue her training on her own.

---

Mishka wandered around for days to try and find a new place to call her home. She had grown up under the canopy of the great tree, and now she felt vulnerable out in the vast expanse of jungle surrounding it. Despite the Gladekeeper offering to always keep her safe, Mishka just couldn’t shake the feeling of danger all around her. So she decided to leave for new lands.

It took longer than she thought it would to get out of the Viridian Labyrinth, almost as if there was something forcing her to stay. Eventually, though, she made her way to the outskirts, into the Everbloom Gardens. The flowers around were blossoming and the water was flowing gently, yet she still wasn’t at peace. Mishka took to the skies to see what was around.

She was surprised at what she saw, just past the water was a forest, just like her home, but instead of luscious greens and vibrant colours, it was dark and foreboding. Strangely, she felt it calling to her. These feelings had helped her in the past, so she flew down to investigate.

As she landed in the middle of a dense, ominous clearing, Mishka’s first thought was how quiet it was here. Back in the Labyrinth there was constant noise, from the insects and creatures all going about their days. Here, there was nothing. The second thing she noticed was all the glowing mushrooms. They were everywhere, of all different sizes. Mishka wondered how she had missed them from the air, they were so bright! While she looked around in wonder, she realised they formed the outline of a path. Taking it as a sign, she began to follow it.

It was getting close to nightfall, and the sky was pitch black. It was as though the stars had all fallen to the ground and taken the form of these mushrooms, they even seemed to flicker as stars do. Mishka was much too focused on following the path to even realise that they had been getting further apart, and their glow growing duller. Then, all of a sudden, as if awakening from a trance, she looked up and realised she couldn’t see anything in front of her. Unsure of what that meant and yet still feeling safe, she laid down right there for the night.

When morning came, Mishka was able to better see her surroundings. She noticed that there were some ruins surrounding her, and thought they’d make the perfect spot to set up camp, providing shelter. With that taken care of, she took to the skies again to find some water so she could gather some food. She spotted a flowing creek not too far from her new home, and she set off.

Her hunting expedition was a great success, having found enough food to supply her for at least a week. The water must have led from the ocean, because she found a surprising amount of squid. Happy with the outcome and seeing it was dark already, she laid down for another sleep.

That sleep wasn’t nearly as peaceful. All night Mishka dreamed of her parents being slaughtered by some foul beast, of them stealing her siblings to feast upon. Eventually she woke up while it was still night and went out for a walk to clear her head. The quiet was peaceful, and she had already gotten used to it. That peace didn’t last long however, for when she arrived back at her camp she noticed all her freshly caught food had been stolen. That sent her into a fit of rage more intense than she’d ever experienced before, and she set off to get revenge.

It didn’t take long for her to find the culprits, a pack of Wendigos. She set onto them immediately, laying attack after attack into the ferocious creatures. They fought back just as hard, and Mishka took quite a hit. Her rage was blinding though, and eventually they ran off. As she went to reclaim her stolen food, she was blindsided by yet another pack of beasts, this time Pronghorn Stompers. They were much more aggressive, and she was already injured. They managed to defeat her in battle, and hurried off carrying all her food. Mishka was too badly hurt to move, so there she laid.

Mishka began to have flashbacks to her childhood, waking up starving and hallucinating. She was much too weak to move and find food, and had all but resigned to stay there forever. Her eyes were closing constantly, and every time they reopened, what she saw would change. Sometimes it was a flock of Tatterwing Carcasses surrounding her, waiting for her to die, other times it was a pack of howling Wraith Hounds, snarling and circling like sharks. A few times she’d catch a glimpse of a golden shape flying past, in the very corner of her eye, but it would disappear just as quickly as it appeared. Believing that everything she saw was just an illusion created by her starved mind, Mishka began to ignore the creatures that flickered in and out of existence.

That is until one being came along, a malnourished looking corven. Mishka realised when he didn’t flicker away when she closed her eyes that he was real, and she was startled. He was holding a scythe and wearing a robe that was much too big for his frail frame, and he had a menacing look on his face. Gathering all the energy she had left in her bones, Mishka stood up, and took one lunge at the creature before falling to the ground again. The Tengu reached out his hand, to give Mishka a slightly old looking fish. She took it gingerly, and began to eat it, feeling the ache in her guts subside.

Over the next few weeks, this creature, his nature and appearance in direct contradiction of each other, nursed Mishka back to health. She had grown attached to the mysterious animal, and hoped that now she was better he wouldn’t leave. To her relief, he stayed by her side, and together they fight the creatures that inhabit their ruins.

They are ruthless, aggressive, and very territorial. Any dragons that pass through make sure to do so in the day, because of the stories of the reapers of Ghostlight Ruins.
