Crawle was born into a clutch of sick dragons. Something had gone wrong in their incubation, strongly possible that some kind of disease from the Wyrmwound found its way into the nest. Crawle's egg was the least affected by the disease, his sister more diseased, but his brother blackened and shriveled on birth, dying only a few short hours after hatching.

Crawle's face, the back of his neck, back feet and tail were born blackened and lacking any sense of touch. When he was hatched, he ate his shell as any normal pearlcatcher, but then something compelled him to also eat the shells of his brother and sister, both fae. Instead of a few hours, it took him two and a half days to finally regurgitate the pearl. It was not lustrous as most pearls are when they start, but cracked and pockmarked, a rugged, ugly thing, malformed where the three eggshells had been forced together. As he grew, Crawle grew defensive about the condition of his pearl, eager to fight any dragon who made a comment or even looked at it twice. As he aged, he reformed the pearl carefully, evening out the strange shape and hiding the ugliness with the strange brown mucus he spat out.

Crawle knows he's different from all other dragons he's met. But he accepts his differences because, despite his terrible pearl and his brown mucus and his strange birth, his blood is still red.
