The Lucanidae Clan : A Meeting In Secret

Orpheus crept upon Meridia as a shadow creeps upon the horizon.
His silhouette glowed with a magical aura, something he hadn't let any of the clan see yet in his brief encounters with them - but Meridia was special, they had a history.
"It's good to see you again, you seem to have made a nice home for yourself since we last met."
"I haven't been here long - but I've decided to suspend my field research for theory... for now. I came here specifically to this grove this afternoon, to meet you."
She almost whispered her last words, with a hushed tone as though she spilled a secret and was frightened of what ears might hang on the loose vines and petals of Everbloom surrounding them.
"That energy that surrounds you... you seem very adept in the arts of the Arcane for a Nature dragon..."
Orpheus' eyes went from a bright emerald green to a dark, burning black for only moments. She stood and watched in awe and held a paralytic posture.
"You're right to pry, I am not your normal Nature dragon, no... You're right to struggle to learn the truth of the Janus. It's a secret long held back, long worming its way to the surface of draconic society. But then, there are few public forums left in Sornieth - as I reckon you know - and so what is known to some remains secret and hidden to others."
Meridia stammered slightly. She went to speak again, but lost her train of thought, as she did so his aura twitched and his eyes glowed for an instant once more.
"Ah.. I see, there is something else you've not told me."
As he said this, Meridia's inaction snapped.
"Perhaps not yet, Orpheus, but I came here knowing to find you here. I came here to tell you. But before I do, I need to know this secret, I need to know what it means for us. The Janus - what are you? What do you want?"
"I'm just a being, Meridia, and my agenda is my own and not very different to yours or anyone else's here in this small clan, not very different at all. And I'm not The Janus, not anymore anyway... Have you spoken with young Malacath at all? I'm not some evil mastermind and I don't desire the illusion of being one either." With this his thoughts went to Eurydice and Osiris, and he faltered. Seeing this gap, Meridia pursued.
"I have spoken with him, yes, and I know how highly he regards you. As do the clan leaders. I trust your intentions, Orpheus, you know why I ask - it's the same reason I research and study on my pilgrimages through the different lands. The desire for truth and for knowledge. Sometimes it feels as though it were a burning in my chest. So tell me - you're ageless... like me and my kind?"
"I have known many Ages - but I do not think I am ageless, no. At least not here.. in Sornieth, I mean. And the same would go for you. Your parents perished after all, did they not? One cannot know true immortality without total freedom from death."
"So... you came from elsewhere?"
"... It would be very hard to explain. Unfortunately for you, though, there is another onus of explanation."
He looked meaningfully at her. His glare was probing and sought to melt her iron will towards interrogation.
"... yes, the hatchlings are ours. I came here to tell you. Since I've decided to stay here for some time, I thought you might want to stay here as well and help us raise them."
"... I will take the firstborn male heir as my protege. That is all."

Meridia looked bewildered. Slowly and softly, she turned towards the horizon - the beaming sun was cutting shapes of light and shadow through the low-hanging willow trees and a succulent scent carried along the moist air. She tried to think long and hard, silently and with poise, attempting to comprehend what Orpheus could mean.

"The first of our hatchlings has already laid - and she's a female. And I wouldn't like to think of her as anyone's heir. They're not for your legacy, Orpheus, they are beings - they will come to grow into adults who either respect you or resent you. I want to call her Lily."

"I think you should send her away. I looked into your mind just now, I've seen her. She's too much like her mother and you know what that means. She needs to be finding herself elsewhere, out in the world. Do you resent your parents for having left you to your own devices so young?"

"... No, but that's different. That's our culture."

"Well, you have no idea about the culture of The Janus, and it's much better that it stays that way believe me. I will take the male, I will raise him and train him to the best of my ability, finish what I half-heartedly began with Malacath. Do you have a name in mind for him?"

"Maybe something similar? Lyle?"

She stood there and looked perplexed. Her desire to try and rend all of this secret information away from Orpheus seemed to be seeping out of her like a light gas wafting among the moist air and the playful wind. She couldn't help but wonder if she were under some spell - she couldn't help think that while she trusted his intentions, there were two other dragons who had been hot on his tail for some time, who were imminently here with them - whose intentions she had no way of deciphering, let alone trusting.
