Biography

"To spend the rest of my life in perpetual discomfort is preferable to that endless cycle of love and loss. Even if I'm alone forever, the dullness of my pain can never hurt me as much as the loss of those I have loved. Each day I await my own death in a state of peace for that is the only true inevitability I have left in this life."

Clematis has lived in the lair for a long time without the slightest display of interest or excitement. He is deliberate and guarded in all that he does, cautiously avoiding friendships and interactions whenever he can. Clematis is known for his time spent in the lair, but his uncooperative and hostile disposition has limited any sort of knowledge about his past. His secretive nature clashes heavily with his fine golden raiment and polished jewellery. Most assumed Clematis was of noble blood and had become an outcast, ever mournful of his deceased mate. His wounds could not be healed with magic or medicine. Not even time could give Clematis the relief once desired. Instead, he has resigned himself to a lifetime of bitterness and solitude, painfully rotting away until his very last day.

Clematis maintains his beautiful appearance and polished golden jewellery out of a sense of dedication to the dragon he loved so dearly. Hidden deeply behind his vigil, Clematis is surprisingly passionate and sentimental. Rare as they were, conversations with Clematis revealed his expansive vocabulary and poetic speech. His engaging philosophical musings could leave a profound impact on like-minded dragons. These conversations were almost always the source of inspiration. Clematis was a savant capable of creating artful literature and idealistic poetry. Immaculate penmanship blended with vibrant inks in an array of different creations. Ranging from the romantic to the abstract, even the most trivial of notes could offer a curious mind new ideas. Yet for all this creativity, Clematis simply hoarded his work in his den. Among the trinkets and treasures of his past, his collection of writings were reduced to a hobby maintained to fill otherwise idle time.

Even after the lair's migration from Plague to Water, Clematis would continue to simply exist. Isolation had gradually eroded any connections or friendships Clematis once had, often the result of his inability to process grief. One by one, every dragon who tried to help Clematis found themselves frustrated by what they had mistakenly interpreted as apathy. He was content with his unhappiness because any feeling was comparably better than the overwhelming grief that threatened to consume him. To live his life removed from the world was just another punishment he had chosen for himself. The longing for companionship was well hidden but eventually Clematis felt conflicted between the bitter irrationality that led to his continued sorrow and the persistent longing for comfort. Beneath his firm resolve to remain trapped in negativity, there was only the wish to be embraced and healed by the care of someone who could understand and love him.

The conflict between these opposing desires left Clematis feeling frustration at his own condition. His mind seemed to revolt against the idea of merely existing. There would come a time when he finally sought company of his own will.
