the founder - not the leader
Before Nan settled down but after he hatched, is not a period of his life he looks back on with fondness, indeed, he'd rather not look back at all. Yet those are his formative years and to understand the present one needs to study the past, always. Nan is one of those few unfortunate dragons that hatched in the middle of nowhere, with no other dragons around dead or alive, or really anything dragon made at all that might give him a clue as to his origin. Just a hatchling in those early days, he didn't understand much. Instinct and hunger urged and taught him to hunt small local game, a shallow stream took care of his thirst. Thus his basic needs were well taken care of, but something was missing, still. He had some language skills he must have picked up in the egg at some point, and making use of those he indentified the problem, the source of the persistent feeling of wrongness, eventually. He was lonely, and he was lonely because he was alone. Like any hatchling, Nan did not care for solitariness. Since noone was around, and as far as he was aware noone had come by in a while, it stood to reason noone would anytime soon. Thus he abadoned the site of his birth, to search for others like him - other dragons. Finding any didn't take him long, though it could be argued that it was more often than not them that found him. No matter. He meet a variety of people, those that clothed him and feed him and sheltered him during the frequent storms, yet he never connected on a deeper level with any of them and soon he was capable of true self-suficiency and another goal had taken the place of avoiding loneliness. That of figuring our his ancestry, if not locating his actual blood family. The short of it is this: He wasted many years of his life on an ultimately fruitless voyage across the world. Well. Wasted in that he had not a single relative, not a single clue, hide, hair or hearsay even, of one to show for it. But during that time Nan learned a lot from those he encountered and got to see the world, so it could be argued that he got something valuable out of it after all. Including the realization that if he wants companions, a family, he'll need to invest time and effort into building up those relationships. When he finally arrived back at the Shifting Expanse, he did not waste any more time in aquiring some land and founding a clan. Nowadays he is not a leader, but just another grumpy engineer, like so many lightning affilated dragons. Though unlike some lucky and unlucky few, when Nan comes home at the end of the day there is always a clan member jumping to stick their snout in his business and personal space. And remembering his somwhat misguided beginnings the otherwise stand-offish wildclaw cyborg goes along with it rather gladly. Knowledge-seeking and hard-working, in his spare time away from work and clan matters Nan keeps busy with his many side projects, one of which is the developing of protetics, thus incidentally helping many a dragon, who, like himself, failed to get out of precarious situations in time. |
