 At the brittle rattle of chains, you look up, eyes meeting the piercing gaze of a sentry. His hands find their way around your wrist, and you let him lead you to the other side of paradise.

Lethe: oblivion, forgetfulness. He stops by the riverbank, then pushes you down into the sand. For a moment, you kneel there, knees kissing the soil. From here, you can see Elysium, feel how close you came to it in this life.

You reach your hands in, cupping the clear liquid in your palms. You bend down to drink. In the moment water touches your lips, you look out again at the two Elysian realms-- the islands of the Blessed and the Lethean fields of Hades-- and wonder why one is meant for men and the other for gods. Wonder if a mortal can make it that far, if you can do it again. And when you look again, there is a hand on your shoulder, the rattle of chains, and then nothing at all.
