It came about in a most curious way, some years ago. Which particular islander's idea it was in the first place doesn't matter anymore. But if you looks in old logbooks and captain's diaries, you can find the story.

The people of the islands were getting very fed up with the government's postal service. The archipelago, devoid of bridges or airstrips, only got their mail in sporadic trips from the boat. It could be days, weeks, or months before you got your parcels. And then all of a sudden, there was a wildfire, sparked by one idea. Late that evening, as they bobbed peacefully at anchor in the cove, the last companion finally slinked into the salon.
"Oh, she's alive!" He welcomed, gesturing with his hand of cards. She nodded vaguely and waved in the general direction of the galley to indicate her mission.
"Tomatoes" She said curtly, prying open the refrigerator cupboard and rifling through the produce. The card game paused momentarily as they watched her slice them up with the utmost precision. Not a word was spoken. The solemn ritual complete, she returned to the small cabin from whence she came, silently toting a plate of tomato wedges and nothing more.
"Don't ask," The captain cut across before he could ask, "It's normal. I'll shuffle."
