Walking Mana Generator “People shouldn't call for demons unless they really mean what they say.” -C.S. Lewis |

The Past
He was not supposed to live, the mana eating his siblings and destroying them before they could even hatch. But he, he was different. It was a faint memory, if it could even be called that, a memory of another dragon who reached out to him, giving him strength. His brothers were not strong enough, but he was gifted. Perhaps it was a gift of life, or the gift of a guardian who looked over him, or perhaps the gods themselves. He came into the world a strong, healthy hatchling, unknowing of the lives of his brothers and sister before him. He was happy. Granted, he had small bouts every now and then, moments where he could not control his power. A simple trip outside would cause the plants around him to wither, and other dragons growing weak before him. They were cautious of him, wary that he would follow the same path as his older brother, to become a terrifying demon like Miras. It was just as well; he learned that the villagers were afraid of him, afraid of what he could become. He was driven to study, to control his magic before it truly devoured him. He hated to study, often choosing to hide and play with the frogs outside than learn, as the frogs were some of the few creatures that would not fall under his touch. He would run further and further, exploring more of the world outside of his village, more curious about the world around him and his siblings than anything else. Then, he was taken. It happened so quickly, on a gentle summer day while he was hiding from his mother, refusing to study again. They blinded him, and yet they were gentle, telling him that he had a purpose, that he could help them. He was young and gullible, not knowing they were simply using him to protect themselves from Hageshikami. They treated him well enough, making sure he was fed and well-protected. They warned him not to stray, that it wouldn't be safe without one of them there, that without him they all would be lost. They were there for him through his moments of hunger, when he would drain the mana from the world around him, turning the grass and flowers grey, and when he shed the gems growing on his body, soothing him as he whimpered in pain. But still, they used him, taking those gems and discovering they held mana within them, enough mana to turn them into weapons. They treated him even better after that, making sure he was well fed and he was able to shed the gems without pain. He truly believed that it was his purpose, to serve this gang and protect them from the menace that was unbeknownst to him his brother. |
The Present The gang's fears were eventually realized, Hageshikami coming to them to garner information about Miras' deeds, as well as other various bits of knowledge he deemed worthy to pull from them. Kobiyu trembled before the elder dragon, something in the back of his mind knowing that he was drawn to this drake, that he was one of the elder brothers Cynder sometimes spoke of in stories. Even as the gang scattered, he remained frozen, torn between joining his brother and protecting the gang that had essentially raised him. Eventually, it was not his brother who convinced him to leave the gang, but Tacchino. The mana-less Coatl was one of the few dragons at the time who could stand to touch him and not be drained of his mana, for obvious reasons. The two became fast friends, rarely seen without each other. Together with their thirst for knowledge, Tacchino helped Kobiyu control his rampant mana, and Kobiyu would freely train with the Coatl without worrying about draining all of his mana. |
