they / them, rarely she
Far and away inside the Crystalspines there was a hidden pocket of a valley, and a clan dwelling modestly within. Approach this valley from almost any side and you would miss it entirely; but if you were lucky— so to speak— and found yourself on the single, lonely mountain path that wound through the thick expanse of Starwood there, at the end of it would be The Fangsong valley, home of [The Arcana], and they would welcome you warmly and with open arms.
At first glance, it The Fangsong would seem like a paradise. You would be given a tour, as much food as you could fit in your stomach, and your pick of lair space. A veritable rainbow of produce and vegetation blankets swaths of the valley, cut through with glittering rivers and waterfalls, all of it supported by ample fauna; the clan encourages peaceful relations with Beastclans, they would explain, and with all living things. The diverse landscape and Chalcedony peaks offer a variety of places to make one’s den, and members of the clan itself— modest, but bustling, and growing all the time— always eager to lend wing or tooth or claw to one’s cause. The community here seemingly tight-knit, kept safe under an invisible dome of complex magic wards.
Paradise.
The centerpiece, however, would be the library within the caves. Built by Sailes, the clan’s progenitor, in homage of the Arcanist’s own, their library was said to rival universities near and far, and they would be quick to boast of it. After all, this clan prides themselves on all they share, least of all being information.
And you should be very careful with any information they offer to you, dear stranger.
This clan may seem so good, at first glance, that you feel no hesitation in accepting when offered to stay. After such a weary journey, who could deny such hospitality? There’s no inkling of anything sinister here. Everything's pink. There’s fields of flowers, feasts, and frivolity. Surely these friendly hippies have no ulterior motives, and this is an ideal place to rest up and restock for further journeys. And there’s so much to do, so many folks to talk to in the meantime, that you don’t even realize— you should have, on the way in, and you'll chide yourself for it later in a moment of desperation— that there is only one way in and out of this part of the mountains…
Should you find yourself trapped in the clutches of these saccharine fanatics, however, you may end up with allies in the most unlikely of places…

Wiztix is a clan progenitor, although Sailes usually retains the title as “clan progenitor” solely for herself. As hatchlings they stuck together out of necessity, during which time Sailes formed a much stronger, very one-sided attachment to Wiz. Despite her supposed reverence for her companion, she often relegated Wiztix to the sidelines, denied them a voice, and implicated them in all kinds of things they did not ask to be a part of.
In fact, Wiztix was going to become Exalted— and alone— to get away from Sailes. Yet when Sailes got wind of this plan and started ruminating on it, she decided that she, too, wanted to become Exalted; that was an even more self-important role than being a clan leader, and she coveted the Arcanist’s forbidden materials.
In Sailes’ version of the story, she merely “forgot” about the reality-warping properties of Arcane crystal, only remembering conveniently after she’d soaked up as much knowledge as she'd wanted from the Arcanist himself. It was only relevant because she had left a Nature dragon in charge of her Arcane clan, and thought it likely that Xenith— as she was called— would become ill or perhaps changed somehow. She had spent generations upon generations inside the dome without leave. It simply must be taking a toll.
And though Xenith remained unchanged on the outside, rising to her duty gracefully, Sailes became obsessed with the idea that she was changed somehow, underneath the surface. Worse than that, Wiztix had been with Sailes for a very long time, much to their chagrin… they knew that Sailes was disappointed by this lack of change. She wanted Xenith to be warped by her time in the Crystalspines. That way, Sailes had every pretense to experiment on Xenith until finally swooping in with a "cure." Imagine the self-importance to come with being the one who discovers the antidote to the Arcanist's forgotten mess. Sailes wanted nothing more than to go down in the history books she hoarded so religiously.
When Sailes had changed her fickle mind once more and returned from Exaltation to her clan, Wiztix saw the wicked gleam in her eyes and the nervous twitch in her claws, and they knew what sort of ill it foretold. Wiz felt aged about 1,000 years by their time with Sailes already, and wanted nothing more than for them to part ways and never meet eyes again… it’s not like it would’ve been hard for Wiz to leave. Sailes hardly ever paid them mind.
But Wiz was as much a progenitor of this clan as Sailes was, no matter what anyone said. They had watched generations of dragons fall prey to Sailes’ carelessness as well as her carefully calculated curiosity. They saw now that Sailes was about to escalate, and how much trust she had placed in them, how many of her unchecked thoughts she had shared.
Wiz knew they might be the only one who could actually take her down.
They had no idea that the Fangsong could contain secrets even Sailes had no inkling of.

- 2014-18 Maize/Azure/Soil - 3.15.2018 Bronze/Crimson/White - 1.23.2022 Shamrock/Shadow/Nightshade *Was tempted to keep this one, but it just didn’t fit their personality quite right. Finally we land on our winner… - 6.27.2022 Shadow/Wine/Sunshine. What a nice rhyme! And I feel like it really does fit their personality this time. :3 |
