She had been a daughter, once. She had been a happy one even. Imperfect, but mild-mannered, a child many parents cooed over as her own preened at her good breeding. She was a pretty child, no hair out of place, no mistakes that could not be smoothed with a loving hand and a light scolding. The same attributes that had made her the shining sun of her family's solar system, they made her desirable. Her quiet nature, polite and gracious, made her too agreeable. Her careful grooming and particular purity of blood, those too made her too valuable. She couldn't be left to merely marry a noble of moderate wealth, not unlike her own parents. No, that wouldn't do, a waste even. No one asked her opinion on the matter, it was decided before she had finished pouring the tea. She broke a cup that day. She was to be given to the newly-ascendant Empress, as a pretty fixture, a prized possession, never to leave that gilded cage. She would never see her family again, no matter how good a daughter she had been. No matter how she tried to hide her tears, there was to be no change. So cry and cry she did, pleading, begging for a chance to try again. To be the worst daughter, to be born ugly, to be born pitiful. Too soon the sunrise came and she was swathed in gaudy silks, awash in glitter and gold. She performed as one might expect of a daughter as good as she, as pretty and as polite. Until the very end, when she struggled and fought, bit and clawed and screamed for freedom, dragged before the feet of someone who could never understand her. For a moment, she found the pain of her loss reflected in the eyes of the Empress--she found solace in that shared suffering, but for only a moment. Just a singular, breathless, beginning--reborn. She was no longer a daughter, nor a concubine, nor anyone's plaything. She was free to choose, free at last, from everything. She chose Foxglove, chose a life of turmoil and constant conflict, of pretty lies and ugly truths. She chose the imperfect, unhappy, unconditional, joyous love of someone who gave herself to Cairn.
